I finally picked up a bluetooth OBD2 adapter.  Seems like Torque is the gold standard for Android, but it is not available on iOS (which has been noted by scammers who have created multiple apps with torque in the name).  It looks like OBD Fusion is the one to get, but wanted to see what anyone else's experience with that or other apps are.  Beyond the usual checking for diagnostic codes, I'd like to be able to see a few basic values in real time, mainly coolant temp, but I could see wanting to do more, maybe converting an old ipad or ipod into a gauge cluster.  This is mainly for use with a LS-based engine swap, but I'd probably use it on other cars in the fleet, too.

I just found Garage Pro for Android yesterday.  They appear to have an iPhone version.  I liked it enough to pay $30 for it since it's capable of reading and resting things like airbag and abs codes whereas Torque cannot.

As far as I can tell, you can either get an app that's good at reading codes or one that's good at making dashboards.  But not both.  What about mounting an older Fire tablet running Torque or something?

I've used dash command with my OBDII dongle and iPhone with decent results, but I haven't used it in the past year or more.

Edit: I also have the foxwell NT630 which I tend to use more than the dongle. The dedicated scanner is more convenient. since the dongle I have requires me to use WiFi to connect to it with the iPhone, where android could use BT.

This thread is relevant to my interests.

Regarding the dongle, which one did you get?  John Welsh gave me a hood but somewhat scary link to an older comparison.  I'm having a hard time deciding.

In reply to Duke :

I ordered this one:  Veepeak

Looks like it does not list Dash Commander as a supported app, will have to look a bit more in depth.  Does say that GaragePro is supported.

I use OBD Fusion, haven't had any complaints about it.

I've had the Veepeak one for a few years now, and I have used Car Scanner ELM OBD2 with it.

I recently did this to monitor coolant temps on my RX8.  I bought the ELM327 from Amazon and downloaded the free version of 'Car Scanner.'   It has been working good for my needs.

I know this is a old thread, however has anyone had any more recent experience in this area? I am running a gen3 LS swap with a 2004 1 meg (blue/green) PCM. The iPad is gen6 MR7F2LL/A. Looking for app recommendation as well as Bluetooth dongle for the OBD2 port. Using as instrument cluster. Thanks.

I struggled pretty hard to get my dad hooked up with an iOS app that was anywhere near as good as Torque. We wanted the live data feed stuff. All we found were the scanner tools, the Torque scam apps (with Torque's name and logo), and disappointment. We ended up installing Torque on his Android tablet. That had the added benefit of making a full-size HUD when we ran Torque in HUD mode.

I didn't know about Dash Command, but it looks like the way to go for iOS. Did you try that one?

I use the ELM327 from Amazon, too. The status LED is helpful, if not a bit too bright. Tape can fix that.

In reply to confuZion3 : Thanks for the reply. I am going to try Dash Command. I had a fire tablet with torque loaded on it. I never could get it to actually run live. Everything loaded up and it said the Bluetooth connection was good but no joy. A conventional plug in scan tool worked fine. May have been the dongle.  I will try the ELM327.

Thanks again.
