So, last episode we discussed what bluetooth OBDII app and dongle to order.
Now I'm curious to what everyone is monitoring with their reader and dongle and whatnot.
I'm digging through and seeing if the Hoop-Tay is smart enough to tell me anything about TPMS pressure sensors to see if it's getting signal, which tire is giving signal, and assorted
You need to be picky about what you monitor via OBD2 because the data rate is so slow that more data channels can quickly mean slower data updates. I mainly use it with TrackAddict as a racing data logger so I log engine RPM, wheel speed, TPS, and oil and coolant temps (also for alarm-triggering purposes). Everything else I get from non-car sources. If I'm troubleshooting something I use AndrOBD to scroll through the full list of outputs.
If I weren't worried about the data rate I might also log steering position (a lot of modern cars have a sensor for this in the clockspring), gear position (this could be calculated after the fact the same way the car does, but it would be quick and easy to take it straight from the car) and TPMS data (although I'm not sure TrackAddict can do this, some special parameters need to be passed to the ECU to get TPMS data out of the Toyobaru's systems).
I have a thread here on my testing:

I was going to test the signal stability with the extension cable and GPS accuracy with an external receiver in 2024, but then I smacked the nose of the car into a pillar, ruining everything. Hopefully I'll get to try those again in a few months.
