I am getting ready to put a new engine in my '99, and it needs a battery. I'm thinking of getting the PC680, and since I'm looking to remove some weight, I figure why not put it under the hood, removing quite a bit of power wire at the same time. I realize that I will be removing weight from the rear, but to some degree, isn't weight removal a good thing?
do not put it near the exhaust. Those Batteries do -not- like excess heat.
I wouldnt put it in the front... if it were a good idea, people would do it.
the 680 weighs all of 15 pounds. Moving it up front probably frees up that much in wiring. I would keep it on the opposite side of the engine from the exhaust. The 680 (and it's like) will "pop" is exposed to that much heat
Could you put it under the dash?
problem I see with the Shorai.. it appears that their most powerful battery only offers 540ccas

Every shorai I have (3) punches well above it's weight. They straight rock.

Which is still about 2.5x that of the OEM battery in the Miata.
Any reason why not just pay $70 for the oem replacement from Advance? I guess I don't understand the "why" in this case. The factory battery is light and cheap and placed in a location that makes sense.
Because even lighter. Moving weight to the back requires an even greater weight gain to run the wire back there. If nothing else, I can find out what the weight savings will be. I can always run better wire to the existing location.

I haven't torn into much of the Miata chassis wiring, but how hard will it be to tease out the power wire from the rest of the bundle? That seems like the most likely time-sink, not sure I'd find it worth the effort.
You think there's more than 3-4lbs of 4awg wire from the battery to the fuse box?
Go for it I suppose, maybe you're on to something.
Guys, why buy Shorai when DelTran is offering LiFePO4 for a whole lot less cash outlay?
By the way, I'm using a 2 pound 240cca DelTran to start my 2.5 liter Boxster (and it was 140 dollars shipped).
Lithium Ferrous is the future of battery tech!
Which model number is that bad boy? I like.
