I bought a '99 XJ8 with 86k miles on it for $2,500 at the dealer's auction yesterday. It was a trade-in at a local Volvo lot.

runs and shifts okay. suspension is floaty. driver's power window doesn't work. sunroof shuts itself. check engine light on. nothing else so far....

i wish i was in a financial position to part it out enough for the 2013 challenge.

I've always liked those and the XJ6, and have always been afraid to buy one. Good luck! It looks like a nice car from the picture.

I will cross my fingers for you. Let us know what you find out about the CEL once you get codes...

I want a Jaguar at some point. Preferably an XJ6. There's an undeniable appeal (though Ditchdigger swears it's a condition with a cure).

IIRC the window motor is also used by a Ford and is a lot less expensive then the Jaguar marked part. Try to find out if the timing chain tensioner has been replaced with a later version. Those cars have weak tensioners that fail and destroy the engine. IIRC gummed up Mass air flow sensors are a common problem as well.

Is.... is that pink? Double bonus points for a pink Jag.
Like many here, I think they're cool, but I'm a bit afraid of them. Good luck.

They seem to be in the >3000 price range. How bad can it be?

Cool. I imagine that if you get the small stupid stuff fixed, it should be a rather reliable car.

It has a ZF 5-speed auto in it, so I would change the fluid if there are no maintenance records to be on the safe side.

Quick search shows they sold new for between $55K-$80K depending on options/model. Worth around $ 6K now. I say you did well. I have always liked them but like everyone else here a little afraid of taking the jump.

With Fords, yes. All it means is you haven't gone and cleared the light then drove straight to the testing center before all the systems have self tested themselves.

P0455 is a small leak. I bet it could be a gas cap.

In reply to belteshazzar:

As said before make sure the timing guides are changed or the motor is toast.

On the transmission you better drop the valve body and put the updated version in. The original valve body has a bad piston that wears out the bore allowing pressure to bleed by slamming the forward A drum and snapping it eventually. BMW has the same issue. It's a high frequency failure at 100k miles

In reply to belteshazzar: Can you pull out the back seat to get into the trunk through the passenger compartment? Hopefully it will have one of those anti-kidnapping glow in the dark release handles that will pop it open.

Not bad that it's not leaking all over. Shoot for $2500 this is looking like a better and better buy.

The picture makes the rust look worse than it is. Everythings solid.

i was also somewhat surprised to see plain old shocks on it, and to learn replacement ones were affordable.
