I'm curious as to what brand oil filters are favored amongst this crowd. What do you use and why?
the jeep gets the cheapest behind the counter ones from autozone. usually around 3 bucks.
the van gets whatever is on sale with the oil that is on sale at the time of the oil change
I use whatever comes bundled with the current "Buy this jug of oil for $15.99 and get this filter free!" deal.
I figure that the previous owners didn't spend any extra or seek out special filters in the car's previous 180k miles (that being my car with the least miles), and it's survived just fine.
I subscribe to the school of "As long as it's changed on time, doesn't matter THAT much."
DO NOT USE FRAM! I've witnessed more than one car using a Fram and having issue with oil volume, etc. YMMV of course.
Also, many filters are sold under other brand names.

When you pick out filter, look for a metal cap and anti-drain back valve at the end of the filter media at the bottom of the filter (look down the mounting hole)
I always used bosch on my Miata so I use those for the WRX now as well. It probably doesn't really matter too much though.
I used to use Frams, until I read all the horror stories on the Jeep forum about noisy lifters on start up, due to failure of the cardboard bits inside the filters.
Mahle on the Porsche, Mazda filters on the Miata, Purolator Pure Ones on everything else.
M3 gets bosch, mann, or some german made (or at least named) filter.
SS gets bosch usually or mobil1 or k&n depending whats on sale.
jeep gets anything but fram, usually blue or black ones. pretty much same thing thing for challenge e30.
For my euro cars I use Bosch, Mahle, or Mann. My japanese cars usually get Bosch because we keep them in stock at my shop.
Both Hyundai's get OEM filters. the Beta's have an issue with certain aftermarket filters being teh suck. Both GM's get ACDelco or Wix.
In the million or so miles that my father and I have used frams for, never an issue.
Including car filters on motorcycles, 7k miles with synthetic, ect.
OEM, NAPA Gold, or Purolator.
Ditto on the Fram. Even their "race" filters are steaming piles of E36 M3.

RX-7s: Wix, NAPA Gold, Purolator PureOne
MS3: Mazda OEM, Purolator PureOne, Motorcraft
Protip for anyone who has a Mazda or Ford with the cartridge filter: Don't use Wix! The filter is too tall and will damage your oil filter housing. Ask me how I know.
