I know electrical things, maybe lots of 'em can go bad but what things will leave you stranded in your driveway or on the side of the road? (Were talking early to mid-2000)

(You can still get where you're going if you're sunroof won't open or your seat heaters don't work for example)

You know everything in that engine bay is electric right? Not just the creature comforts?

I actually don't even know if those later models had the Lucas-china-town-knock-off-handbag fuel injection.

Why not get a Japanese Land Rover alternative? Or...dare I say it....a Jeep.

Well that's why I was asking... I've seen great engines coupled with crappy transmissions and vice versa, I seen motors that'll run for 300k while the vacuum-operated stuff craps out early.

I've seen great drivetrains mounted in terrible chassis.

Point being: a window might not roll down and the interior may fall apart while the drivetrain keeps on rollin'. I have read where oil can get into injectors so that's one wrench thrown into my hope-gears.

(I've owned 5 Jeeps and 3 Japanese a "Land Rovers" but none of those really had the romantic history I guess)

Edit: I realize there are other threads with similar info including my own perhaps but I can't find it and I figured I'd try to include just the things that'd leave you stranded, not just annoyed!

my 2003 Disco uses Bosch Fuel Injection. I have had it since last july and have put 10,000 miles on it mostly drama free. I say mostly because the power steering pump blew a gasket not long after I bought it.. but like most things in a LR, it's made to be easily rebuildable and the gasket and seal kit is readily available.

The only things that do not work on mine is the passenger side power door lock and the "park" on the wipers. Those were broken when I got it and I am just now getting ready to fix them.

But for things that will strand you.. supposedly they are known for spitting out the front driveshaft. I know there is a kit to retrofit a stronger shaft/U-joints.

Thank you! I had read about the front driveshaft getting cooked by the Catalytic converter and failing due to last lubrication?

and it is not so much headgaskets on the 4.6.. but the steel liners that drop. The engine is based on the old aluminum buick engines, so they have steel liners for the cylinders. Eventually these drop a bit can cause sealing problems.

Another problem the 4.6 has is mis-aligned dowels on the oilpump cover. my 2003 is right in the middle of the build run with that problem. What it does is cause pressure on one side of the oilpump that eventually fractures the gears

I had a bunch of becm problems that manifested as no-starts. I also had a couple front u joints die, but I was going off road every weekend at the time so I don't know if I can blame that on Land Rover.
