Gen 3 Montero, like a landcruiser but cheaper.

Interesting bit of logic there.
x2. Winter tires do 75% of the work for winter driving and you wont be buying those. You will never need chains. Ever. If you get a snowstorm to need chains, youll do what the rest of Alabama is doing. Watching TV and skipping work for the day.
Save the weight and instead of something AWD like a Pilot that you might appreciate once , you can get more torque and space that you;'ll appreciate everyday in something like a Suburban.
You said 5000lb towing is a nice to have, not a must. If that's the case, this isn't even a discussion. Minivan is the only answer. It's mission in life is to serve young families, and nothing does it better. Most of them can tow 3500lbs, so you won't be completely stuck. I've towed lots of cars with mine.
I'm digging the Ford Flex. Seems every bit as nice as the Explorer, lower to the ground, slightly less towing capacity.... But you can a newer model with lower models for much less money.

And you can get the flex in twin turbo all wheel drive. Just in case. Not that the awd would be useful for ANYTHING because lack of ground clearance but whatever
Lexus gx470. Maybe a newer gx460. 4wd, will go anywhere tows great rear air bags really even out the ride on it you can still locate some sub 100k pieces, just gotta do the timing belt on them at some point.

So what you are saying is the 80/20 rule. You are about to spend 80% of the resources on something you would use 20% of the time. Or in this case 97/3 rule.
Dude, seriously get 2wd. You don't need 4wd, this is a primary vehicle right? Then just get a 2wd enjoy better driving dynamics, better fuel economy, less operating costs, less maintenance costs, etc.
Full size SUV. Suburban, Tahoe, Sequoia, Expedition. It really doesn't matter, all of them will do what you want with capacity to spare.
Towing 5,000 lbs? Do you really want something that is maxed out or the tow beast with another 2,000 lbs in it's bag of tricks? Two kids and a dog? What about when one or both of the kids wants to bring along a friend? Oh yeah, 7 passenger goodness FTW!
Maybe it's my belt and suspenders attitude but given a choice between "just enough" and "comfortable excess" I'll take the latter every time.
I currently have the Suburban but had an Expedition before and I think it had a nicer ride and better brakes.
