I, being paranoid, always do a bill of sale for both me (the seller) and for the buyer.  Each gets a copy with original signatures.  Something like this:

Date

I, "Seller name" do hereby sell, bargain, and convey all right, title, and interest I may have in one "Vehicle year, Vehicle maker, Vehicle model, VIN #_________ to "Buyer name".  Sale price is $XX,XXX, receipt of which is hereby acknowledged.

This vehicle is sold as is, where is, with no warranty either expressed or implied.  The seller acknowledges that they have inspected the vehicle and accept all faults that may exist as a condition of the sale.

Seller Signature                                                                             Buyer Signature
Drivers License #                                                                            Drivers License #

In my state, the title has a notice of sale for the DMV that either gets mailed in or dropped at the local DMV office.  I try to do one or the other the day I sell the vehicle.

I had someone come back with the threat of legal action years ago. After initial phone call from buyer and his buddy lawyer I told lawyer to “go for it” and ignored any later phone calls. The car was a VW GTI in great condition when sold. The new owner complained about excessive oil use However when sold used no oil at all between oil changes. I suspect new owner used the car very hard in a short amount of time. Never heard from either after a few phone calls.

After that experience I used a Bill of Sales similar to CJ’s with two copies both with original signatures but went one step further by having both notarized with stamped impressions. Usually if you use a bank they will notarize at no cost but even if you have to pay it’s only a few bucks. Have sold numerous cars and boats this way with no problems.

2 copies of the bill of sale. Buyer and seller each get one. Says clearly that there is no warranty implied or written or anything.

Nocones BOS even has time of day of the sale. I like that one.

Disclaimer: I work for the company.

My lst car I bought, I did the usual bill of sale, but I did so electronically using DocuSign.com

I signed on my cell phone, seller did the same.  I have a digital, fully legal copy of the transaction now. I even attached pictures of his driver's license (did the same for myself).

I had an issue in the past similar to others and the registration, I don't want to have that problem again
