Some parts of the way this forum work are really annoying. Like how when you click on a thread it won't immediately take you to your first unread post.

Another annoying thing is the thread notifications. Rather than sending you one notification, with the note saying there may be more posts, it send you a notification for every single post.

So I don't want that from some of the threads I'm subscribed to. How do I unsubscribe from them?

Click on the "Jump To..." drop down list in the upper right and choose 'Your Watchlist'.

Once there you can see all the threads you're watching and there is the option to remove any of them.

When you say, "don't work" I'm guessing that when you "heart" something the tread goes into your watchlist but you're not getting notifications.

If I click on the yupididit profile I see he is watching two threads and one is about xjrs. If I click on SVreX profile he is watching two and one is on Snowden. If you click on my Avatar and then scroll down you will see I am watching dozens of topics.

As for notification, this is a deeper function in your personal profile. To get there click on your own avatar and edit profile. One of the options in there will to get notifications. Clicking on this will send you notifications to the email address you signed up with. In cases like SVreX that could have been and addresses from more than fifteen years ago.

In reply to John Welsh :

I stopped trying many years ago, because I could never get it to send me notifications.

At this point, don't really consider it very important.

BTW, apparently you have more access to my account than I do.

When I click on my profile, it does not show me anything about threads I am watching.

Correct. For you to see what you are watching you go to the grey box titled "Jump To" and the last choice is "Watchlist"
Conversely, if you click on my avatar and then scroll to the bottom you will see all that I am watching.

For me, I don't want notification (and a clogged up mail box.) Rather, I use the Watchlist like bookmarks to important threads I want to easily get back to like my personal build threads or other nuggets I might want to reference later.

Sometimes I think this site requires waaay too much detailed instruction to operate properly.

Oh, how I agree that this place seems to still flourish despite its own attempts to hamper itself.
However, knowing some of these features makes the user experience here that much better.

Lately, flourish is a relative term as Facebook dominates the space once served by forums. I think we are touching on a larger issue that GRM forums seems to now have overtly skewed demographics of over 50 yr old users and certainly over 40 yr old users with little new blood coming in at the 20-something demographic.

I'm 46 and right up there in my top 3 reasons I come here is the family-friendly conversations even if they do get heated once in a while.

Passion is evident here and I had gotten so weary of someone posting "flame war!" or something in anticipation of a brutal keyboard fight on other car forums.

You guys feel like friends and I find I'm correcting myself often saying "well, I don't KNOW him but he's part of the same forum I belong to." after telling friends "I know this guy who put a X Big Block in a 19XX...".

Not a perfect site technically but it more than makes up for it in friendly car talk with very very few exceptions. Not to mention the amount of information I have gotten from here, it's astounding what you guys know!

My two cents. Probably off-topic too, sorry.

I agree with your assessment.

I do, however, also strongly suspect that the primary target demographic for the GRM advertisers is probably also skewed heavily toward the older crowd.

I have a feeling that the people who pay the bills LIKE the demographic.

BTW, I also appreciate how willing you are to help people navigate the quirks.

I'm 28 and have been a member for some years but I've been lurking the forums since I was about 20. I forgot my first username so I had to make this one when I finally decided to post.

I do think I'm one of the younger regulars to post. I believe that "G body" fellow from Canada is about 19 years old.

Going way off the reservation but Gbodyman is also very good at writing about things. I really enjoy reading his stuff when he writes a review or a "story".

The forum is what it is. Oh. And it is free. Since we are not paying for it we have nothing to complain about.

I suspect that even being on a forum moves you out of the youth demographic.

Facebook is a terrible replacement for forums. It is good for quick headlines or quick conversations. It can never replace a forum like this that has years of knowledge that is simply a click away.

Yeah, I've told several people that on a few Facebook Groups I belong to, especially when they post questions that have been answered many, many times before in forums.

It's not that I mind answering the questions, but when they obviously haven't bothered to do any research before asking, it's a bit silly to say the least.

I usually do a quick search for them and post the forum results to help make my point.

I can see it being helpful for events, showing off your efforts/videos, etc.

You'll need to log in to post.
