Being fastidious about maintenance is what I do. My lowest mile car is also my oldest, yet the one I've owned the least time. This is not a logic puzzle, sorry.
So I bought new plug wires for the M5 and the S38 according to the Bentley is supposed to have a maximum resistance for the plug wires of 30k ohms. None of the old wires resisted less than 100k ohms. wire 4 was over a million ohms. I was shocked (no pun). I thought that was pretty cool though, and the car does run much smoother now and has much more power. Wish I'd done this five years ago.
You have to measure the resistance at the voltage it is used at, or closer to it anyway, when you are dealing with high resistance. Things change. You need what is called a "megger." But, yeah, those were shot. The fact that one was 10x over the others is indicative of that.
I read "One Million Ohms!" In the voice of Dr Evil.

Of no assistance to you... but this thread made me sing the song for my own amusement...

I never did forget how to read resistor color bands after that little ditty from my 10th grade science teacher.

In reply to Dr.Hess:
That explains why when it was plugged into the coil only wires 5 and 6 were over 30K. 5 was 33k and 6 was 74K.

Dang, it's been so long that I had forgotten this mnemonic device...Holy crap did I spell mnemonic correctly on the first try?
In reply to Giant Purple Snorklewacker:
The only one I retained is a worse variant, starts with black instead of bad.

Your 10th grade teacher taught you that song... Where's that school man? Uganda?
same diddy that was taught to us in tech school in the '80's
Yeah, new plug wires.
Mnemonic never works for me. If anything, it makes it harder to remember.
