ON my rover (plug wires aren't in yet). Pulling on the boot, pulled too hard and got only wire. So, in my 35 years or wrenching, this is the 1st time I've pulled this bonehead manouvre. So, got the innards apart but cant find a central wire to create a circuit. What should I be looking for??

Looks like a black rope. Might be just a bunch of black strands, like a horse's tail.

Can't get any continuity even with the black hairs

The wire is a big resistor, you won't get continuity through it, service manual will probably give a spec, or check some known good ones.

I think you just fold the conductor back over the outer jacket and then crimp the connector over the outside.

You need to check for ohms, but I couldn't tell you values.
