I'm convinced I can't do things the simple way when it comes to cars.
I've been looking at 1994-2001 Range Rovers. They sure are pretty, will tow 6500 pounds if set up correctly, and will ensconce you in leather luxury. But will it start? The good news is that it won't be my only vehicle. The bad news? That's what I'm here to find out. Looking to hear love stories and heartaches.
Cheers,
Jeff

Get as new as you can ('01-02) for best results. I had one (2001 4.6HSE) for a few years, At 100k miles, I replaced the air ride bags ($100 per corner) as the old ones were getting age cracked. Easy DIY job (about 10 minutes per corner). You can replace the air ride with coil springs, but the air ride has been pretty much scienced out and a lot of owners are going back to it from coils. there is a complete O-ring kit to solve the distribution box issues for it, and a neat kit that lets you fill the 4 corners individually with air from an external source if the compressor goes TU.
The nav unit is sensitive to battery power, and can be swapped out for a later MK IV DVD nav that is much more stable (shares its nav setup with BMW).
Those are the only two issues I had with mine over a 3 year period and I drove it all over the east coast and out to Ohio, including towing a travel trailer.
Very nice driving vehicles, and the adjustable height air ride is nice for bad weather, and offroading.
I have one on KO2s and it is unstoppable. I love it. I've owned it longer than any of my other cars.
Aluminum body means no rust. Airbags means great ride yet adjustable offroad capability. Old Buick V8 means reliable, unkillable engines (well . . . not quite . . . ).
Either way, do it, they're awesome - you will not regret it.
Just carry a mallet, adjustable wrench and screwdriver.

Did your mother drop you on your head when you were a child?
And I say that with all the kindness I can muster.
So what year did the cylinder liner issue start?

anything with the 4.6 had the cylinder issues. the 4.0 was not immune either, but it is much more rare. the 3.9 is nearly bulletproof

And therein lies the problem. The good engines are in the Classic and not the p38 and later Rovers.
The odd thing about the cylinder liner issue is that in the UK, the 4.0 has more of a reputation for liner issues than the 4.6, whereas over here it's the other way around.
I like my wife's P38, but given a choice I'd rather have a Classic like the one I owned in the UK. Only in better shape.
Classic is the one to own, if for no other reason than they are now entering the investment stage. A low mileage, almost mint one, went for over 43K on BAT recently. Didn't see that one coming.

I think my black over tan one I had, that I posted at the top of the thread was rather pretty for an SUV. A clean, balanced and proportional design with great detailing.
I had a couple classics and this P38 (including ahving a County LWB and the P38 HSE at the same time). No question, I'd rather have the P38, and I had ZERO problems with the cylinder liners.
And the 4.6 towed SOOOO much better. I just wish I had kept that flawless Classic until now to sell for stupid money.

I was kinda wondering that comment myself. It looks like every other Land Rover, which is to say it looks like a small box stacked on a big box. Pretty? Pretty boxy, maybe

Aaaaah, Chris_V. You've been the voice of unreason regarding so many different cars I'd almost talked myself out of wanting (Series III XJ6, Range Rovers, etc...).
Keep doing what you do, man.
