Oh my God.
See, I disagree. Now, of course, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near that thing while its on the dyno. But too much power? Never.
"It will not have enough power until I can spin the wheels at the end of a long straight in top gear." -Mark Donohue
Funny thing.... In the 917/30 at LeMans Elford tried all through practice to figure out how to start the race in the 917 without spinnning the tires clean off the wheels. He thought he had it down, a balancing act on the clutch and brake. When the green flag dropped though, it all went out the window and he spun the tires all the way to the first corner- still in the lead. Apparently, no matter what he tried on corner exit and shifting into top gear (4th) at roughly 130mph he would lay yards and yards of rubber down as the tires just spun and spun. It seems that 1500hp (reported cough cough) in a 1400lb chassis might be just about right.

I am re-reading that book right now. I just got a hardcover first edition at GoodWill for 16 bucks.

When did the 917/30 race at Le Mans? The 917/30 was the CanAm/Interseries car.
You know, your right it was not the 917/30, and now I am bashed to remember which variant of the 917 it was.

Where is the best spot to camp out along the course to take photos?
Rent a blimp
Anywhere? When we went, we just found a place to park and spent the day there. It was awesome. I'll see if any of our regulars (like Jim P.) have a better answer.
In reply to David S. Wallens:
David! You guys should really send someone out to the Peak this year, its shaping up to be really awesome. If needed I am sure we could provide some support as well, as we have several (as in many) guys who will be all along the course taking pictures, video, etc. thoughout the week. You have my number :)
