I am not flipping cars really at this point so no weekend car hence the big budget.

You basically described the 911 in that statement. I'd get:

Plaid speed
2010 911 Turbo S PDK.

Cabs and heavy sedans don't translate as well to autox, driver training, track days etc.

Another alternative would be a C6 Vette.

wearymicrobe wrote: The local dealers are total E36 M3. It part of the reason I have not bought a Aston/Lotus/Jag in the past locally. They had exactly what I wanted in stock, went in to test drive and they treated me like just below them, feet on the desk sort of thing, fake Panerai 88 on each of theirs wrists. I actually went into the sales managers officer and pulled out a bank statement, that I brought as income verification, popped it on his deck and told he exactly where he could stick his sales staff.
Wish I could have seen his reaction, and the sales guys when he ripped them a new one. Didn't the Manager beg forgiveness and offer his first born in an effort to win you back?

It was amusing to say the least. There was no groveling though he knew better then that, he just thanked me for my time and went to knock heads.

What I wanted from all you guys was the 911 Turbo coupe was the answer. That seems to be my thought as well. Though if I found a well spec'd 911S in PDK I would not kick it out of bed.

I need some car guys that are local and not hella stance or complete idiots so I don't have to bug you guys.

I have been doing some horse trading in the background to free up some cash but its getting harder and harder to make any serious cash to make it work so this would be for the net couple years at a minimum.

You'll be happy with a 911. They are very nice cars.

I think the 911 or AMG wagon would be good choices although the AMG maybe not so good for auto crossing. As a previous poster suggested, the GTR might also be a fine choice. That's a heck of a list though and you really couldn't really go wrong with any of them.

Of that list: R8 or Plaid Speed. Are those 911s doing 2.8 0-60 runs now? Without voiding some warranty, or exploderating some transmission? Kinda cool. But the R8's shifter is SO COOL! The rest of the car is OK too.

Where's the Ford GT on this list? Stupid-fast, supercharged, 'Murican, and downright good-looking. Oh, and it's got a funny background story (remastering Henry Ford II's berkeley you to Ferrari). What's not to love?

I thought GT40's were already in the 'park it and let appreciate' phase. I wish Ford had made enough of them that they actually got driven.

Ford GT40's have been collectible for decades, the Ford GT on the other hand never really depreciated. Them made just over 4,000 of them. Working here I had the dream that they would depreciate to the point where I could afford one, now they just seem to appreceiate

My vote is the R8, just because it being used as a decent daily driver appeals to me. It does lack some in the ease of daily driving but not really when compared to the majority of your list. The sane answer would be CTS-V, but I don't think that's the point of this list.

I was trying to think of something to compete with the list so far... but if an M5 is too common then a new M235 or M4 would be out of the question?

So... sticking with your list - no love here for anything with a puffer on it and I think I'm probably in the vast minority saying the R8 is a giant yawn generator once you get past the looks.

I'd buy an NA Porsche. Probably a 991S or a Cayman RS (or is it just R?) but a 997 GT3 would be on the list too.

Are peoples perceptions of the R8 based on experience, media info or Internet lore? What is wrong with them, I think they look awesome and I haven't heard bad things about how they drive either.

I had a student with one at NJMP. It's pretty to look at and it's a capable car for sure but it goes about it in a way that just has no ... "Wow". That is the best I can say ... it's a boring car. I'll use the jelly bean S4 of the late 90s as a comparison. It was pretty, looked aggressive, had specs to die for but... it drove like a fast turbo LeSabre. They don't feel "agile" I guess. It feels heavier than it is and just goes about it's business with zero drama. Boring.

I would have a hard time not getting the Aston. Performance wise I know they are not at the top of the list but just being able to see and hear that car every day would be a hard thing to pass up for me.

I was fortunate enough to nab a space at the Audi Experience @ NJMP. One of the Audi reps went on about how he was driving the R8 on long trips getting lots of thumbs up and it would take him a moment to remember - HEY, I'm in the R8. I didn't think this is so boring you forget you're driving an exotic was the greatest sales pitch ever but I can understand how a lot of people would feel differently. For better (usually) or worse (sometimes) my 360 never lets you forget you're driving something special.

Sorry, meant GT instead of GT40. But yes, there never really was any depreciation on them and seeing one in the wild is amazingly rare. I don't think anyone drives them much.
