Link to the car in question.

What do we think is wrong with this thing?  Ignition system?  Carbon buildup on something important?  Something way worse?  Rust may be a deciding factor, although I'm not afraid of repairing it if it's localized.

I'll be at a rally all weekend but if it's still around afterwards I plan to go look at it.

Should not have clicked on the link, too close and too cheap

7 page thread about PO300. Sounds like the most common root cause might be carbon buildup. EGR system contributes as well.

PS: When you sell a "mechanic's special" in Mechanicsburg, is it just called a "special"?

The discombubulator has come loose from the enaculabreator causing the windingulator to be out of ballance.

How do you let a Mazdaspeed 3 get in that condition?  Please slap the owner if you decide to buy it.

I had one of these. Really fun cars. I miss mine. Sad to see one in that shape.

Plugs or coil would set a specific cylinder code most likely. Sounds like carbon buildup. Could be low fuel pressure, need scanner to check. I cleaned the carbon on mine at 80k. Put a catch can on at the same time.

if it’s driveable, check for it poping out of second gear. My second disappeared at about 95k.

I'd put good money on the back of the intake valves being carboned up. Maybe a 3 hour job to fix it. Looks stock, haggard, and has high miles so it's a safe bet they've never been done.

Edit: If you grab it change to a stud kit to make life easier when you pull the intake manifold. Also check the injector seals for evidence of leaking. They're a known weak point and it'll cause that code or a ZZB.

I'm resisting the urge to leave work early and grab it out from under you. I want to turn something like that into a monster track rat. Though I probably wouldn't live to see tomorrow if SWMBO found out.

randomly-occurring air leak causing occasional random misfire.  look for torn air intake boot between MAF and TB.

Why don't you just do that and "hide" it at my place- hell, we can even put the title in my name to be really sneaky about it cheeky

That would be the 2nd GRMer-owned MS3 residing at another GRMer's place that I'm aware of. We may be able to start some kind of oddball trend/cult here.

Anyone in the DC region looking to buy an MS3? You can store it at my place. Lol.

They'd both be black too! Though I know the other one is significantly less rusty.
