WAY past time to replace the plugs in my wife's '14 Mazda 6 with the 2.5L SkyActiv. What's the hive's suggestion for most-loved plug in these engines?

Also, what's the word on the "required special tool" to change the serp belts? I should probably do that too since we just crossed 100k. Hate to have her sidelined for a belt failure.

That motor is a direct injected 11:1 compression ratio VVT motor. I would not stray far from the stock plug, I think it will be picky as that motor is near a diesel.

I read somewhere that they were working on one that was compression ignited.

bentwrench, it's called the Skyactiv-X and it's already available in some markets.

I'd use the stock plugs. And Mazda comes up with special service tools for absolutely everything, I'll bet you can change that belt pretty easily. I've never tried.

Stock plugs. I can't see any reason not to use them.

In my (limited) experience, Mazda + special belt tool = stretch to fit belt.

This was on a 2010-2012(?) Mazda3. Loads of fun frown

They aren't "working on it", it's in production.  Supposedly with real-time cylinder pressure monitoring that they are using for feedback controls, the real reason why the tech has been delayed for so long: they were waiting for PCM technology to get fast and cheap enough to be production-viable.

As far as belts go, I bought all sorts of SSTs for stretch belts, and they suck.  I did the ziptie method and it worked way better than the SSTs could hope for, for almost infinitely less money.  I had a witness:  the first time I did it, i said "Damn you, Internet!  You were right!"

Can you explain what the "zip tie method" is? The stretch belt tools I used were terrible. I resorted to grabbing the service writer who was able to push the belt over the pulley while I bumped the starter. Watch your fingers!

In reply to stanger_missle :

The way I've done it is, you get the belt on the crank pulley and as far as you can on the other pulley, and zip tie the belt to it as far up as you can.  Then turn the crank, carefully making sure that it's not walking off the crank as you go.  When the belt is all the way on, just keep turning the crank and you'll snap the ziptie off.
