Guess it got so hot around in the summertime that my rearview mirror let off (have a rally-style attachment that probably didn't help with its increased weight). Just the other day, I had someone drive into my lane break off the sideview mirror from where it's mounted (mirror still attached via wiring, so all is not lost). What's GRM's recommendation for an adhesive that'll get these things to stick without ever falling down again?

There isn't one that lasts forever.

I've had fair luck with the FLAPs kits. The glass has to be spotless before you glue it though. Not just clean, but completely and absolutely spotless. Any oil or film and it'll fall again.

3M makes a rearview mirror adhesive kit. I used it years ago when the mirror fell off my old GTI. I cant speak to long term reliability but the mirror was still on there solidly when I traded it off 6 months later.

For the interior mirror, I went to my local auto glass and trim shop and they did me a solid, cleaned and glued for no charge, IIRC it took about 5 minutes.  For the exterior, I have nothing to offer.

As mentioned in an earlier thread, I have used J-B Weld when I got tired of the parts store adhesives failing in a year or two.  Never had one fall off since I started using it 8 years ago.

Got the JB weld set for the sideview mirror

Deciding to go with the 3M adhesive kit, but slight problem - to those who are familiar with 3M products, what's the difference between the 08752 and 08749 kits?

Trust me. Use the JB weld.   You already have it.  It is one of the few things that I like to use JB Weld on.

  • Take off the mirror from the metal mount from the windshield.
  • Clean the mounting surface and the windshield very well.
  • Mix the epoxy and spread a small amount on the mount.
  • Press the mount to the windshield and tape over it.
  • Let the epoxy set, remove tape, and attach your mirror.
