My roommate has a PT Cruiser and the brakes are squeaking. The wire to the ABS is broken. Would that explain why the brakes are squeaking? The pads have been replaced recently but the brakes are still squeaking.

Bleed the brakes and then bed the pads properly and see if that helps.
While bleeding, check to make sure the calipers slide back and forth properly as they might be hanging up slightly.
Define sqeaking. Metal on metal sound? Typical brake squeal--like when a truck comes to a stop? Were the rotors turned/replaced? How long ago were the brakes done, and did this noise start right afterwards or a couple days/weeks later. Any pulsation in the pedal? Details...
Typical break squeal. Rotors replaced as well. Brake fluid bleed then. Noise started that day. The brakes were done at the Chrysler dealership.
Cheap parts that were not originally produced by Chrysler. Probably the lowest priced chinese E36 M3 from Advance/AZ/etc.... BTDT, don't do that anymore. Oh and didn't use any brake cleaner to clean anything.
Just throwing this out, because I did this once: I had a squeal problem with my Protege--quality pads and rotors, not junk. Driving me nuts. I pulled the brake pads the next day and coated the back of the pads with CRC's Spray on Disc Brake Quiet. It put down a rubberish-type film on the back of the pads. Reinstalled them, and no more squealing at all. Whenever I do brakes, the back of every pad gets a coat. Worth a try.
