Pulling into the garage this morning I noticed a puddle under the neon. It's oil. Crank oil is full. I quick look see underneath shows a big oily mess on the underside of the tranny near where it joins the motor. So it would appear to be gear oil.

Looking for suggestions on how to proceed. Is this a known problem spot for Neons? I had peaked under there before and notice it was grimy, but it's a whole lot worse now.

Any help would be appreciated.

It may well be the main seal, but check the oil pressure sender, too. It's in that neck of the woods (center back side of the block, low) and they are known to fail and spray oil all over.

Headgaskets are usually more of a weep down the back side of the block.

I'm with Duke on this one. It's most likely the oil pressure sensor. They're prone to do that. Back of the block, just under the exhaust.

I developed a transmission oil leak while running at Summit Point. Turns out the pinion shaft in the differential had come adrift and poked a hole in the case.

It's not leaking. It's marking territory

Most times you can sniff it and see if it's gear oil or regular motor oil and start with that.

I was going to say "wetting itself like a beat dog" but I thought it might not be all that helpful

My Neon does the same thing. The entire bottom is covered in oil, and it leaves a puddle wherever I park it. It stops dripping after it cools down, however.

and you're surprised, why?

No, I'm not surprised at all. The car has been a pain in the a$$ since I got it (it was a gift, so I'm not out for the car). It's only redeeming quality is that it's mildly interesting when the motor spools beyond 6K.

And have you looked under the hood? It's a cram fest in there.

Thanks for the advice.

Have you looked under the hood of almost any other new car? The neon is one of the easier cars that i have worked on to get to everything.

I hate transverse mounts. My 00 Outback has lots of room to work. I know, I'm just bitching.
