Looking over the rules, I didn't see anything about driver requirements. I'm needing to know a minimum age and if a valid driver's license is required to compete. Thanks for any info.

You find a jockey-ringer to drive your car? lol

Ha! No, not exactly. I have a friend that wants to enter his Mazda 626 in the challenge and have his son drive the autocross. His son is an accomplished kart and JR Dragster driver, but is 15 and does not yet have a license.

Anyone in the know, please speak up. Thanks,

Drivers can drive in accordance with their license.

If, for example, you have a permit from your state which says you may drive with a licensed driver in the passenger seat, then you may drive at the Challenge with a licensed driver in the passenger seat.

My son drove at the Challenge at age 15 on his permit.

Hope this helps.

Do they check the card at the door? I'd say stick a helmet on him stick him in the car, and let it ride. Granted you kinda screwed that up by TELLING us he was underage.... but you get the idea.

I disagree. This would be a liability for GRM, and a violation of their insurance guidelines.

Lets not E36 M3 on the living room rug of our hosts, Ok?

Soooo.... A challenge driver needs to present a valid drivers license or permit at registration, is that what I'm to understand??

Just trying to clarify. I wish it was in writing somewhere, the point being that money and time will be spent on car prep, etc, and they just want to make sure they're not doing it in vain.

Basically, you just need to meet the Martin Sports Car Club's requirements for the autocross, and the NHRA's requirements for the drag strip.

I'm looking for clarification from Martin now.

As far as the drag strip goes, you'll have to call the track for clarification on that. They can be a bit funny about their rules and restrictions.

We aren't out to make it harder for anyone, so as long as it isn't dangerous or a clear violation of one of our generous partner's rules (like the insurance company or the Martin Sports Car Club), we'll try to make it happen.

Edited to reflect new information.

Tommy:

I may have steered you wrong. The OP didn't mention a permit, I did.

Dont the SCCA rules require a valid drivers license?

SCCA Solo Rules said: Children under twelve (12) years of age and pets shall be prohibited in the staging, grid, start, finish, and course areas. Drivers from eight (8) to twelve (12) years of age who are participating in an approved Junior Driver program under the requirements of Section 19.2 are exempt from this prohibition during their run group. Otherwise, they, too, are prohibited from these areas. Furthermore, staging, grid, start, finish, and course workers should be at least sixteen (16) years of age. Drivers from eight (8) to sixteen (16) years of age should be assigned to other worker duties as outlined in Section 19.

Here's what I found when I was autocrossing at age 15:

Note that for any driver under 18, you'll need to bring a signed minor waiver.

Here's an update:

The Martin Sports Car Club sanctions the autocross, and while they use most of the SCCA's rules, they are not the SCCA.

I'll do some research and come back with a definitive answer.

Here it is, page 2:

Martin Sports Car Club said: 1.0 Driver/Passenger 1.1 Each driver must be at least 16 years old and possess a valid driver's license, subject to approval. Minors must have a minor release form signed. 1.2 Drivers may have one licensed passenger ride with you during your competition runs. Non-competitors may ride with you provided they are at least 16 years old and have signed the insurance waiver. Additionally, novices are only allowed to take experienced drivers with them as a passenger during competition. Multiple passengers, during fun runs, are subject to the approval of an Executive Board member.

Their contact address is:

info@martinscc.org

it might be worth a shot to ask them, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

There are 15 year old spec miata drivers and 12yr olds auto-x'ing karts so... I'd imagine not.

Sorry, Aero. Didn't mean to lead you astray.

What I shared was what Per had previously told me (I've brought a LOT of kids over the years).

That differs from Martin's current guidelines.

Thanks for the clarification, Tommy.
