question about vacuum hose on auto 88 323

Ok, first of all I own a 88 Mercury Tracer 1.6 which I'm sure most of you know is the same vehicle as an 88 Mazda 323 fwd, non-turbo. The only differences that I know of are the lack of an overdrive in the transmissions

Sorry, I am new to the forum and do not see any place to edit. Anyways myy questions are this What is that thing with a vacuum line sticking out of it that looks almost like a bell that sits right on top of the auto tranny and

Nate, can you post a pic? Is it above the tranny on the firewall or somewhere else?

No it is not on the firewall. It sits right on top of the transmission, under where the air filer box is. I will post up a pic for you later. How do you post pics on this forum?
