Like it says, I want to give my 09 Fit 5 speed the good stuff, and can't figure out weight. The crappy factory manual says regular motor oil can be temporarily substituted 10 W 40 or some such. Anyone know the weight of Honda Manual Transmission Fluid?

I changed mine twice on my '11 Accord and bought the stuff at the dealer. It's not marked any where on the plastic jug. It is thin compared to the old 80w90 days in my Datsuns.

In the old days it was 5w30. Same as the crankcase. When they came out with specific manual fluid it was supposed to have additives for the newer syncros.

Redline MTL. It's a 75w80 viscosity. The same as the OE fluid

Or just use the OE Honda MTF. Nothing wrong with it.

MTL, or MT85 if you run it hard. I like to look up what its specced for in Europe, they tend to call for stouter, thicker fluids as they dont have CAFE to deal with. The Valvoline UK site is useful for this, though in your case it looks like its 75w80 GL4 every 2years/36k miles or so worldwide.

Thanks all. I considered the stock juice, but this transmission just feels like the weak link -maybe just paranoia, maybe true. I just would really like to do all I can to make sure it lasts. The 75w80 just sounded thick compared to motor oil. And for the record, I baby this thing, but I wouldn't rule out the occasional autocross, or aggressive street driving. Again, thanks all for info.

A 75w gear oil is roughly equivalent to a SAE 30w motor oil. You won't be doing any harm by using the OE stuff or the Redline.

SAE engine and gear are different scales.

I would just use the OE stuff. It's what I use in my Hondas. Syncros in the 1g insight and the early K series cars sometimes have issues. Haven't heard much about the other transmissions.
