What do you guys use and like? It would make getting in and out of the RX7 a whole lot easier.
Seems like the general consensus is get the splined type, and be ready to spend $50ish on the setup.
Apparently the hex type wear and get sloppy.
NRG makes some good affordable ones that will automagically align. The 949Racing team uses them in their enduro car, makes driver changes faster when you're not trying to make sure the wheel's straight. They have electrical contacts too.
I'm with Keith here, I've used one in my autocross car for 8+ years and we use another in our Chumpcar... another team member bought one for his E36 build as well. They lock nice and tight, no alignment worries (only lock on one way, just spin into place) and come in fun colors.
Extra bonus is you can use the same wheel in multiple cars, as the lock patterns are the same across the line :)
I had one in my FC3C so I could more comfortably leave the top down and not worry about the car being stolen (the fuel cut switch helped with that too, but was only half for anti-theft and the other half for helping when the engine flooded ). I had an NRG quick-release hub that worked without fail, but had a cheap splined adapter that attached it to the steering column- and after about 5 years when pulling out of a parking space the splines on the adapter sheared partially off. Apparently the cheap adapter didn't like the torque you had to put into the wheel to turn my de-powered steering rack at a standstill.
Moral of the story: always get a solid, name-brand adapter, and inspect it every year or so for wear- if mine had failed on the highway instead of a parking lot (though the highway failure would be unlikely since the force required to turn the wheels is a lot less...) I'd have been right berked.
