race car fiberglass and bodywork questions. hopefully simple enough.

so, im getting back on the MoCar. finally. i REALLY want to have it on track in the spring. 

anyway, i have a couple of things that are coming up, and i sont know what products to use. 

first up, i have a race weight fiberglass hood. no hinges or anything. it will be a front tilt hood due to engine setback, and i would like to do nascar style hood hinges and supports. the question is, how to attach the metal L brackets to the hood so i have some where to run the pivot bolts? never tried to do this before, so im not sure what to do there. 

next is the bare metal body repair spots. i really dont want to mix up a spray  gun of epoxy primer and tape off everything to prime it, then do filler over it. is there any direct to bare metal rattle can stuff i can shoot to put filler over? i honestly was thinking the rustoleum autobody primer in the rattle can would be good enough, but would rather not have problems later on. car will be finished in single stage at some point, as its a track car.

so, ideas, reccomendations, links?

I have had good luck with rustoleum "clean metal primer". It is white in coclor and is very tough. It does take longer to dry than normal rattle can stuff. It is my go to for the spitfire panels when i have bare metal and it can sit for years without signs of rust. It is also a real pain to sand off, but heat from welding lifts an edge easy enough for cleaning around fresh welds.

For attaching metal to fiberglass parts you need to use epoxy. The stuff we use at work is the two-tube syringe mixed stuff. Not cheap but very effective. I have some tubes at the house and can get you the model numbers when i get back home after the holiday.

You want the metal bracket and fiberglass to have a pretty good tooth exposed. The metal needs to have holes for squeeze thru. Clamp it up and let the epoxy cure.

Re the hood: why not do 4 hood pins?

Its awkward and aggravating by myself, and tough to find a place to put it.

If you want to use epoxy primer under filler why not brush it on? I haven't done it myself but I can't think of a reason it wouldn't work.

michael, here is a shot of the epoxy we typically use to attach metal to composites. This has a 30 minute working time. There is a 5 minute blend also. The longervthe working time the stronger the final result, usually.
