I do not see the Race of Gentlemen mentioned here anywhere. I meant to post something about it last week, but was traveling.

Anyway, one of my students went down to see this (at the Jersey Shore) last weekend. It's a drag race (of sorts) held on the beach. Mostly limited to flathead-powered vehicles. He reported back that it was like going back into the '50s. Sort of a Goodwood for Hot Rodders.

I'm sorry I missed it and will try to attend if they do it again.

Here's a LINK to info and photos (sorry....it's another forum).

Also, some photos below:

Looks pretty awesome. Hot Rods aren't really my thing, but I bet it's a really fun event to go to and a cool crowd. One thing I've always liked about the automotive world is that no matter what it is, from muscle cars to oval racing to top-flight concours and international road racing, the vast majority of people involved are awesome and the events are amazing to be at.

Yeah, this would be perfect for the big expanses of sand in Wildwood. And it would make it closer to me so I could go see it :)

Wildwood's getting more and more uptight about this kind of stuff though, even the car shows on the boardwalk have been a struggle this year I've heard.

It looks like I'll be draging my wife to Jersey next year.

Yup. I want to build a rat rod now - just to do this event.

The Oilers Car Club of NJ runs this event.

They do not appear to have a website (that I can find, anyway), but they do have a Facebook page HERE.

May want to check this site for upcoming events.

Entrants had to be preregistered and I've been told that some folks (on Harleys) showed up without registration and wanted to participate. When they were rebuffed they caused a fuss which required the local cops to intercede. I hope this does not screw it up for next year.

There are a ton of cool photos on that link. Man, I wish I was down there.

Yeah, those guys were fine because they were preregistered. Old bikes were welcome.

But I'm told there was a group of folks that didn't sign up ahead of time but still wanted to run; they just happened to be on Harleys.

It sounds as if it was sort of invite only. You had to send a photo of your car with mechanical details for approval.

In reply to Woody:

Bearded dude wearing a Thrasher cap riding a vintage Indian (with a suicide shifter?) barefooted. This photo contains more bad-ass'ness than an entire H-D dealership.

I can understand pre-registering with approval. It wouldn't have been nearly as cool if somebody with a bike or car that didn't have the right look.

You can find us on these two Facebook pages. The town was very happy with the way it all went down and have invited us back next year. If the word RatRod is used there you will be blocked http://www.facebook.com/OilersCCRaceOfGentlemen http://www.facebook.com/oilers.carclub

Hey, welcome! Looks like a great event. Is there a link to the rules (or were they on the Facebook places, and I'm just an idiot)?

Thank you.

Are spectators welcome, or do I need to build a car for this?

Yes absotootly! there were 3,000 spectators there, “We had zero problems,” said Allenhurst Police Chief Robert Richter of the event. “This was the first time this town has seen anything like that. In reply to friedgreencorrado: Cars and motorcycles have to be pre WW2 period correct. Submission were taken and approved for a limited number of spots, though next years may be bigger and who knows we may be coming to a beach near you! Our last big event was The Motor Speedway NJ '09 a summer of drags and mayhem at the 1/8 mile at englishtown.
