SC300 or SC400 could be fun. Probably not the ideal SR/PR cars but should do quite well on all but the tightest courses.
that beetle could be turned into a 996 killer and be something closer to a GRC lite spec car in terms of power (though remaining rwd) if you wanted, and all for about $5K. Built it and bring a cannon to a knife fight.

Did these come with an LSD?
I'm not sure. I think it's the same situation as the IS300; they're out there but not the easiest to identify. SC400 is automatic trans only which is a big deal to some people.
When I was looking at SC400s some time ago, it seemed like the A/T General Grabbers would work with the stock wheels.
When was the last time you could get a V8 Mustang with a factory LSD and 16 inch wheels?
And I don't think and auto is quite the handicap people think it is as long as you have power and learn how the LFB well. There is a Subaru locally that is wicked fast with an auto.

running sub $1500 924 with a clean title. Now you have me tempted.

That's also not Prepared legal... you can add a piggyback but can't remove anything.
This is why I love the classing we run locally.
The rules we run are a bit too broad, but they break down like this:
Is your car stock on street tires? Stock class (AWD or FWD) Did you change something, or are you running rally tires? Modified class (FWD or AWD)
The fact that dirt limits grip and traction is so much of an equalizer that the rules should be simplified. To me, if you are not using the stock ignition, you're modified, and at that point in time it is up to you how much you want to remove or add.
I guess if you wanted to break it out more, you could run like this:
Stock- no mods, street tires, skidplates allowed to be added
Prepared: rally tires, interior removed, suspension modifications allowed using factory mounting points, LSD (if not factory equipped) allowed
Modified - anything goes
They early CTS came with a manual with the V6. The 3.5 made 255 HP. I can't figure out if they had an LSD available in the non V cars. They do weight 3500 lbs, but they had 16 inch wheels (at least some of them) and can probably fit a decent tire. They're cheap and would be oh so comfortable to drive 1200 miles in.
Edit: they did offer a LSD in the non V cars. Hmmmmm......
How much are the 16v MB 190e's bringing these days. I wonder if you could talk Mercedes into offering contingency.
Why would you want a manual transmission? Major liability IMO.
I'm only still running one because my easy path for automatic doesn't survive much over 7000rpm.

If I had one I could convince not to shift out of second when I lifted (I know, don't lift) an auto would work fine.

I'm pretty sure you need to do this. You in a Benz, me in a Caddy, half a dozen gold chains.....SR would be swamped with all the female RX groupies.

we've had one running with us the last few years every few events. It has yet to finish a single event. And it's also not fast at all.
