The emotional side of the story is in the rant section. A more embellished version may be forthcoming.
Here's what happened.
The car didn't automatically upshift at a light.
I paddle shifted up to 60 mph.
It cut power, like limp mode, I pulled over and it shut itself off, while in gear.
The shifter recessed into the console.
It would not power back up and service trans warning appears.
Towed to Range Rover shop and they say I need a new engine.
The car won't roll unless you put a screwdriver into a manual override under the hood.
Anybody dealt with similar?
The dealer said it threw 50 faults and they couldn't clear the codes.
Threw 50 faults...that's a lot. Seems like electrical trouble. I would start with bad ground.
Your comments of "wouldn't shift" and "forced it to shift" (via paddle) then "service trans" warning are not things that make me think the engine is bad.

I couldn't agree with you more.
I read the title and was like " well....yeah".

Yeah I know. Sort of waiting for the pile on. It was not my greatest moment buying this.
I'd definitely ask what led to that diagnosis that after what sounds like a transmission malfunction, you need a new engine. After all, if the engine had gone into limp mode I'd expect the transmission to short shift, not hold the gear until the engine explodes or one shifts manually.

Seems the dealer saying it needs a motor is the go to play for them. A few months ago I read about someone taking delivery of their brand new Range Rover. After dieing & all kinds of cels, the dealer said it needs a new engine. A Range Rover dealer can say anything to the typical owner since they usually have no idea about anything about a car given the typical buyer/leaser.. The Evoque is beautiful, after seeing many & driving beside one for many miles I was thinking about what will happen when the bad things start. LS is my only suggestion.
"The shifter recessed into the console." The Range Rover Evoque is a beautiful vehicle, but this is the most intriguing part of your post. Did the shift actually, physically stow itself into the console? Like withdraw itself from use?
Also, with respect to the engine, I don't know the gear ratios of the transmission. What RPM was the engine turning in 1st gear at 60MPH? (Never mind, I see you paddle shifted until 60mph, not "at" 60mph)

"It was not my greatest moment buying this."
Live and learn.
I have nothing useful to add but good luck, Land Rover Roadside Assistance helped pay for my wedding when I was driving a tow truck.

That's what he means. It's a knob that pops up from the console when the car is started. When it stopped, it actually stowed itself into the console.
Take it someplace else. A second to opinion can either comfirm this or save you a bundle.

If it is taken to another dealer, can that dealer look up the history & see what was diagnosed & said to him, then just say the same thing? I've thought about this before. I have never bought a new car or dealt with dealers so I don't know.
Maybe it's still too cold outside and the shifter turtled? Wait for it to warm up some and see if it'll pop out?
Before we go too far - what model year is it?
The Evoque is a fascinating little car as it has some Ford in it. It's on the "D8" platform, which is based loosely on the Ford EUCD platform, which was under the LR2 and a host of Volvos here in the United States. Early Evoques use the 2.0 liter Ford EcoBoost turbo four and an Aisin AWF21 six-speed slushbox. There's not much "OoO scary British" about them. Newer models moved to the Land Rover-built Ingenium turbo-four and a ZF automatic.
Electronics are most likely gonna be Bosch stuff.
I'm with everyone else, it sounds like voltage or ground issue, or a sensor providing the wrong/no input and freaking the computers out. Take it to a good indie shop that specializes in Euro stuff or Land Rover stuff, ignore the dealership.

LS crossed my mind. Too many projects. Sell you this idea for cheap though!

That is correct. Really fun at first...until it's not. No way to get it to show it's head when pre-ignition is not allowed.

It is at a good shop now...a friend is giving it two days of after work diagnostics. Wednesday morning I get the word. I'm leaning towards a wiring /trans module. But I don't play with electronics at this level.
Might sound dumb, but I'd disconnect the battery for 24 hours. See what resets.

I don't think that is dumb at all. That's what I was going to do...assuming my friend's shop doesn't solve the mystery by tomorrow.
That would be very humorous if it was to work.

This statement right here is the only proof ever needed that beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder.

Ooooh, disconnecting the battery on a modern car, especially a Euro car, can cause all SORTS of problems.
Do that on a BMW and you're in for a couple hours of re-registering about 150 different control modules.
