Hey everyone. I'm fighting some rasp after making some exhaust changes on my car. I recently put in a 12 inch long, 3.5 inch diameter vibrant resonator to hopefully fight some rasp I am getting. It definitely helped, but I am still getting unwanted rasp under hard acceleration.

When fighting rasp with resonators, does the diameter matter more than the length, or is it the length that matters more? I'm looking to purchase an 18 inch long vibrant resonator to add to the exhaust (in addition to the 12 inch), and they offer them in either a 4 inch diameter or 5 inch. I would like to keep the exhaust volume pretty much the same, and don't want it any quieter, but would like to eliminate the rasp as much as possible.

So, would I be better off adding in the 18 and 4 inch or the 18 and 5 inch? I'm no expert on exhaust tuning/fabrication, so any guidance is appreciated. Looking to learn more about how this works.

What is the ID of the pipe and where are you putting it?

 

But yes, the more internal volume (not counting pipe ID) the better.  It also helps to have the resonator as far forward in the exhaust as practical, as does having a good amount of pipe between the muffler and exhaust tip.

The piping is 2.5 inches, and the resonator will be going midway between the first resonator and the muffler. There isn't too much piping between the muffler and exhaust tip, just a 180 turn towards the rear bumper cutout and then the tip.

You think that the 5 inch diameter would be better to get rid of rasp, while still allowing the volume to be similar to where its at now? I'm looking into the vibrant 1793 vs 17930, if that helps.

Realized I forgot to mention the car; its a NA Miata with the 1.6L.

Legit question, I've thought of for years. Going from say stock exhaust, to a "free flowing" larger pipe and performance muffler, the sound is affected, for that gain in flow. If we then add a resonator, how much of that gained flow do we loose?

I'm no expert, but the vibrant resonators are straight through so I can't imagine too much is affected. You can look straight down out the other end of a vibrant resonator, just like you can with a straight piece of pipe.

But a straight through "glass pack" from the 70s, is straight through, with perforations, and actually flow quite badly, if I recall?
