Well, kinda sorta ;)
Mini Dacon 928, from Brazil, which apparently used actual Porsche 928 taillights and other obvious styling cues. I never knew this existed but it is awesome :)

What with all that.... space in back, I'd think the 928 would be a good candidate for an actual rear engine conversion. And by space in back i mean awkwardly bulbously large rear end.

I actually had a similar idea, but with my 968. With its rear transaxle, and quite a bit of space between the front of the transaxle and the backs of the seats, it's at least theoretically possible to fit a compact engine back there, and convert it to a mid-engine car.

Thank goodness. The first couple responses didn't even seem surprised....

I guess the real question is :why would you even want to? The 924/944/968 have pretty ideal weight balance as it is. I would think making it mid-engine would actually make it handle worse, not better.
I never thought I would see a car that makes a 914 look pretty in comparison. I can admit when I am wrong.
I guess in that ‘80’s movie where Tom Cruise gets out of his 928 and exclaims “...Porsche. There is no substitute...” he hadn’t seen this.

I've always wondered if the engine sounds in Risky Business are actual sounds made by a 928 or if they are just some random engine sounds put in there during editing.

Mainly as a way to save a ton of weight. It would get rid of the heavy iron torque tube, and the 968's engine is very heavy - its crank alone weighs 55 pounds, plus you have the balance shafts. This daydream of mine would be powered by an all-alloy 13B rotary engine, so the conversion would knock at least 300 lb out of the car. Plus, as duclberson says, 50/50 isn't necessarily ideal - there's a reason every race car at the highest echelons of the sport is mid-engined, as well as virtually every high-end exotic, and even the next Corvette.
