First off how common is this? The motor in question has just shy of 320,000 on it.

I have been quoted 9 hours to r&r the trans and install the seal but they were up front with me in saying they are concerned that the crank is worn and it may not work.

Since I really don't have a lot of experience with Vortec motors with this kind of mileage any input on this would be apreciated!!!

Former boss replaced his rear main at 310k miles on a 5.3L 'burb. LAst I heard he was still daily driving it 60 miles a day. Biggest problem he had was the exhaust studs were done and snapped.

Yep I got that problem as well. I am going to see what. ARP sells to replace the stock bolts.

You should be able to speedi sleeve the crank if its badly worn.

I wouldn't be too worried about wear. I've never seen a rear main wear like that. If sleeves are available it should be fairly straightforward, although the seals are harder to get on without bending the lip and losing the spring.

I think most of the wear you see at the front seals comes from external debris getting up against/under the seal lip with a flywheel cover on, the rear mains stay relatively clean.
