Red Krinkle Finish Valve Covers

Can I do this at home? Anybody try this? Powder Coating? Is there a way to do this or leave it to the professionals?

We used to do it with paint. I seem to recall heat lamps.

Now we have it done by a powder coating shop. It's more consistent and a whole lot easier!

That's what I used for my GT.

I baked it in the oven while my wife was out. It's held up fine. Just make sure your prep is good.

Looks like they have a primer for it.

I used to do production paint for a tool company many years ago. They had a black crinkle finish paint that they dried under heat lamps. No idea who made it. You'd spray it on kinda heavy and put it under the lights. Crinkle!

plenty of companies make it, available at any retail auto parts place. I used plasticote or VHT IIRC on my bmw VC. Put it on thick, toss it in oven.

Yeah, standard industrial coating, used to do a ton of it at a factory. Thicker, even coats are best. Too thin, and it wont crinkle properly, leaves flat spots, then you have to strip it and re-do.

Keep an eye out for old ones that are being thrown out. I picked one up down the street from me - literally less than a block away - from a house being remodeled. I was originally planning to strip it for sheet metal to use on the car, but the owner of the home said it works, and that the missus just wanted more modern appliances. My shed is already wired for 220 because of the welder, so I just put it in there....haven't tried it yet, but I intend to use it for powder coating.

If you have the room for an extra oven in the garage/shed, they are probably not that hard to find....

I used eastwood powder, and then put it on the mill to re-cut the raised logo.

Minimal. The smell of the oil (cooking in the oven) was worse than the paint.

It was my $2003 challenge car and my daily driver for the next 5 years.

VHT wrinkle plus NEEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDSSSS heat. I have tried doing the same paint to the same part three times and ended up annoyed every time.

Learn from my mistakes and use a LOT OF HEAT.

You also need to be a decent sprayer because you need to put it on HEAVY without having runs. For awkwardly shaped parts (like what i was doing) this means you need to turn the part and hold it in different positions to spray that heavy on the different sides without having runs.

If you spray it too thin it wont wrinkle. If it doesnt get hot it wont wrinkle.

Your wife's hair dryer will work too.

Just dont get overspray on it like i did. She definitely noticed.

Dupli-color makes a spray paint wrinkle finish with no oven needed. I haven't found it in red though. I do recommend painting it in direct sunlight to "encourage" it to wrinkle faster/better. 2-3 thick coats looks great when done. Very durable.

You can do the same thing with a scotchbrite pad on a rotary tool.

I used Dupli-color and a heat gun for mine.

Without the heat gun I got a very uneven wrinkle finish.

Yep:

Red engine enamel, no masking, dried in the sun, cleaned up afterward with a jitterbug sander, various grits and a polishing wheel.

I had to re-read who the author was twice on this one to make sure it wasn't me because I've been thinking about doing the same thing! My valve cover is already wrinkle finished black but I want to paint it red. I guess my dilemma is do I paint it with a red wrinlkle paint or could i use just a regular red paint? Any suggestions?

I haven't used the wrinkle version, but have used Duplicolor engine paint....the normal version looked good but was not real durable
