In my engine compartment, any and every wiring loom is turning to dust at the thought of contact. What do you guys use to protect wiring and keep the gremlins away?

New wiring.

Turbo Volvo?

Just use a good quality wire, not the bulk stuff at Harbor Freight.

Look for wire with insulation marked as "cross linked" it's something they do with the plastic to make it stand higher temperatures. 125c instead of about 100c.

In reply to Trans_Maro:

If turbo Volvo, just swap to LH 2.2. OEM replacement harnesses are available too. There was a recall back in the day. I used to sell 2.0 harnesses for $70. Turbo harnesses were more, iirc.

My title must have been a bit misleading. The wiring itself is fine. The insulation is deteriorating.

Same solution.

Bare copper wires, touching one another, don't work well. If you're thinking you can coat those wires with brush on insulation or such, it won't work worth a darn.

Or perhaps you really don't mean insulation, but the tubes that are used as looms? Where a bunch of wires are run together. If that's what you mean instead, zip ties work just fine.

Buy some new split loom and replace it all?

if looms, i use the painless powerbraid. E36 M3s indestructable. if you mean the insulation that covers the copper, only solution is new wire. american autowire has the BEST quality insulation and wire quality ive ever seen short of late 80's honda products. youd probably have to buy a cheap universal kit to get all the different colors, but they may sell it to you in a box without all the stuff you dont need.

That's the terminology I was after! The loom. The flexible tubing that bundles wires together.

Like he said, zip ties work fine, but if you prefer the stock look, you can buy that stuff at most auto part stores. Sometimes even in fancy colors. Are you talking about this stuff?

Yes. I wanted to ask the hive mind if there was anything that sets one product from another, or it it's all the same.

You will find at least a couple different temperature ratings out there on split loom. Get the stuff rated to 300F or so for underhood use.
