As witnessed in the rants thread, DD#2 smacked a guard rail in her 2006 Pimpala. I plan on prying the fender back into shape, but I need to replace a headlight unit. In fact, since the other side is all cloudy and shedding its interior chrome, I plan to do both.
Its a 2006 that is in nice shape otherwise, with low miles. So:
Do I find OE bits at the junkyard and polish them up, or do I order new Chinese replacements from Rock Auto or Carparts.com for less money and less work? I don’t plan to change away from halogens or anything, just decent usable replacements.
Amazon was my choice for Niece's Boyfriend's Impala...
I'd go the cheaper route and keep them clean. It can't hurt to spray some UV sealant on them to keep them clear going forward.
I've been happy with Chinese lights from eBay, for the GMs and Fords I've had.
I have found that the cheap replacement lights look great compared to old lights that have been cleaned up, but the reflectors aren't always shaped as well as the OEM parts, so the light pattern can be sketchy.
RockAuto replacements sold under the TYC brand. Good value for the price. I did spray a clear headlight protectant on them to stave off future cloudiness.

I just put a pair of RockAuto replacements on my daughter's Focus. They work great and make the car look 5 years newer. I think they were $40 each for the complete headlight assembly with bulbs and everything.

Awesome, thank you all.
I have a spray bomb of clearcoat. Will that work, or should I get something specifically for headlights?
In reply to Duke :
If it's got UV protective qualities, it should be fine.

Did they come with new lamps included?
I'm finding stuff on Amazon but reviews are mixed. The best-reviewed product comes from PERDE. It also seems that specifically 2006 Impalas require an OE-style recessed adjuster to fit in the car, but many units have a projecting adjuster that fouls the radiator support and doesn't let the unit sit back in the car correctly. At least in the tiny picture, the TYCs from RA appear to have the correct version, but they are also about $20/side more expensive.
I tried that Meguiar's UV protective spray on the LEDs for my Samurai and it started to peel off after the first week of use. The first week included an offroad rally where the headlights were whipped by a million branches and splashed with the worst that nature and farmland had to offer and then left to sit unwashed though...

I just bought replacement TYC light for our new to us car and they came with all of the bulbs installed in the assembly. I was very pleasantly supervised.
Ebay or rock auto. When in doubt new is the answer.

On my Hondoo, they did not. I had to use the OG lamps.
The reason I gravitated to TYC brand is because we have a local aftermarket place called Certifit and I have bought a lot of TYC stuff there over the years. By in large, the plastic stuff like lights and grilles have satisfied me with their quality. The only reason I mail ordered these lights is that Certifit is about an 80 mile round trip which I didn't want to make, plus mail order saved me 8.25% sales tax.

You may be the first person to ever utter those words, autocorrect be damned.
