From the little bit of research I've done it seems like the getrag 282 is a fairly popular trans to use for transverse mounted gm engines. It was the one most guys were using when swapping fieros. It is supposed to bolt to the 3800sc and handle that level of power and torque. I don' know how available parts are. There is limited slips available, aftermarket only, and expensive.

I could have sworn that it was but further research seems to indicate that that only happened in my head.

That’s because there isn’t another trans mounted starter besides the 4T60/65 that came with the LS...

That's probably because it was a combination that really, really ought to have happened, but didn't.

im selling a camry e153 transmission to a guy doing an LS4 swap into a minivan. So maybe camry v6 5 speed transmissions would work?

Anyway, have you driven a stock 5.3 fwd car? They're torquey but 'meh' otherwise. Which sounds a lot like a modified 3800 you could do much simpler and easier!  This is going to sound funny but the first thing i thought when i drove a 5.3L Impala was 'hmm, this is like a modern 4.9L Cadillac Deville with more high rpm power'. Glowing praise, or guilt by association? YOU DECIDE!

 I have to ask- Are you saying that a compression test will find a leaking head gasket?  Cause it won't, unless there is a chunk of gasket hanging out the side of the block.

Sometimes if it fails between two cylinders it's noticeable. Otherwise, it's way down the list of clues. Cooling system pressurizing way faster than coolant temp rises is a much better clue.

So - pulled the head this weekend. And the results were a bit weird. The head gasket itself looked intact. (Given that it's a back cylinder on a transverse V6, for all I knew, there could have been a chunk of head gasket sticking out of the block and I couldn't have seen it!). But there was enough Dex-cool sludge in the head coolant passages that I don't regret having pulled it - some of the coolant passages were blocked. There were black stains on the intake valve, probably from coolant leaking in through the intake manifold gasket. No sign that compression was leaking out either the rings or the valves, and no sign of a crack in the head or block, either.

On a supercharged engine, can a boost leak hurt a compression check? Where was the compression going?
