Pretty much exactly what the title says... I going to look at a '92 A-package in about 1.5 hours. Plan would be to max out for STS within six months or so... but... if I can't find one with a VLSD, how easy/worthwhile is retrofitting one?
I'm also wondering if I'd just be better off with a 94-95 1.8L... open diff but a little more power and not much more weight...
I assume you can't run a 1.8L with the torsen then? That would probably be my first choice if possible.
Most VLSDs don't seem to be doing very well on the LSD side of things anymore so unless you are planning to refurb/replace the LSD with a working one, you'd be looking at something that works like an open diff anyway.
It's actual actually pretty east to swap. Drop the diff, remove the pumpkin, insert new pumpkin, reinstall diff.
If you go 1.8 the better flywheel choice is a 95 since it has a lighter flywheel. It's bug advantage is a higher second gear mph vs. The 1.6. The gearing change means the thrust profiles are similar
Easy to retrofit. You simply bolt in the new one and change the stub axles.
They do work, even though they've been getting a bad rap for the last 20 years. They just don't work as well as a Torsen. They never had much torque bias.
I've run open and VLSDs on a few different 1.6 Miatas, and I definitely notice an improvement with the VLSD. No, it's no Torsen. But it's STS legal. Only downside is that functioning VLSDs are getting harder to find and more expensive these days.

Yeah, that's what I'm worried about... I searched ebay and I think there was one for $400 and the rest were $800-$850.
Just seems like if you're gonna have an open diff anyway (worst case... can't find one to retrofit, or the only one I can find is pretty much burned up) then might as well have the 1.8L right?
TBH unless you're in the driving god category, I don't think there is that much difference between the 1.6 and 1.8..

That's my feeling... hence preference for the 1.8L... if that makes sense? Not really. My sunburned lips hurt. Stupid sexy autocross.
