Well this is fun....
Wife's car has been sitting for a month so so, I went to take it to the car wash and run a couple errands, heard a little tick but nothing crazy. Took it home and she ran errands and mentioned it was ticking. Popped the hood and had her rev it..... 29k on it.
It was a bit low on oil last oil change (2 months ish ago)
Drained it and its full of glitter....
Thats the bottom of the drain pan....
Is it even worth trying to do bearings with that much glitter all through the engine?
Is it young enough to still be under the powertrain warranty?

Have to drop the pan and check condition of the journals. If they haven't worn, you can certainly replace all the bearings and carefully flush the glitter out of there - PITA though if you do it in the car - takes at east one oil change usually. Don't know if you can find a pleated felt oil filter - Crossland used to sell them. Great for running a bit after starting up, then shut down, pull the filter, pull it apart and read the entrails to see how much glitter is there.
My experience is that once you hear knock, you are screwed. But ultimately, only opening it up will tell you if the journals are scored or if one of the bearings spun.

Is it a Hyundai/Kia? Because I believe there is special coverage on those, due to the amount of them blowing up unexpectedly (Our dealership stopped reselling any traded-in Hyundai/Kias for a while, because we had so many of them inexplicably blow up on customers.)

Nope, out by a couple years.

2016 CX5

I opened the filter that was on there up.... Not great.

Yeah that is my feeling too, its barely noticeable driving...

personallty, that is a little more than glitter. That looks like journal shrapnel to me, unfortunately. If you look at 10 o'clock on your filter pic, you can see a fleck that is definitely not bearing material.
Assuming this is a 2.5L Skyactiv, I'm wondering if this is one of the ones they recalled for cylinder deactivation issues. They remedied this in 2018. My wife's old CX-5 was recalled to reflash the ECU to actuate the cylinder deactivation at the proper times.
A tick-tick could be something easy like a lifter not pumping up (dirt). A rod knock you can hear down the street.
In reply to Tony Sestito :
No its the 2.0L
In reply to 914Driver :
Every engine chassis combination is different regarding how loud it is. I have heard really loud ones where the crankshaft survived without a re-grind, and a 100-4 Healey sounds like a valve tick when #4 rod bearing is spinning oil-less in the rod...Both rod and crank trashed.

If the pan comes down easily it is worth a look. With that much glitter there is a major failure somewhere. 29K seems short for 7 years, did this have a long sit with old oil at some point in its life? Or get run seriously low? Is the glitter the top of a cam lobe? Month long sits are evil.

^This.
Just got a notice for a class action suit for the 2.4 inline 4. Mine was great until someone rear-ended it on the interstate. I didn't think the older 2.4 port injected engines were included but apparently it's every model with the 2.4 from 2011-2017 if IIRC. Part of the settlement is an extension of the powertrain warranty out to 150k miles.

I may pull it, not till next week tho.
It was low last time I changed it, I think pretty low IIRC, but I dont remember eactly. It does sit a fair bit, hence the low miles.
This is one of those cases where a sudden catastrophic failure is a good thing.
If the rod bearing just exited for whatever reason, rapidly, then you will probably be okay. Oil is filtered.
If there was a chronic low oil level or low pressure situation that caused it to fail after a long time of abuse, expect a lot of wear elsewhere in the engine, including places that can't be repaired like the camshaft journals.
That has all the hallmarks of a spun bearing. Something inside is going to be blue.
Is your driveway sloped? Can you roll it out in front of a passing gravel truck?
