I was thinking about this project before I read up on the budget challenge, now I am pretty excited and wish to participate in 2017? (to late for this year)
The car I am thinking about has been totaled... twice, or three times, depending on your definition of totaled.
Shortly it could have been had for free after it is used as a parts car for a different project (if you haul it you can have it sort of deal), but now I am thinking it deserves a new life!
It has been on fire, rear ended, and had its interior badly damaged by radio and speaker thieves. It will have it's motor, tranny, ECM, engine harness, door internals, and most other salvageable parts removed, in effect, it will be a rolling frame.
Can I count this as "free" in my budget. allowing me to purchase a "parts car" with my $2016 / $2017?
I was unsure of where to post this, I am a total noob at this forum.

IIRC, free cars count as Fair Market Value(FMV)
This often ends up as scrap value, and scrap is very low right now. Call your local yard and ask for a value.
Or the rules could have changed since I last looked. Either way good for you trying to give it a new life and good luck.
Depends on what it is and what scrap value is.
Yep. Free cars, or cars you already own, count as fair market value.
We'll see you at the Challenge!
I motion that if it has BiTurbo in the name you get to start at $0.00.

It is, or was, a 1990 base model corvette, total weight will be under 1500 pounds. Maybe under 1000. anyone care to guess what it would be worth as a scrapper? I was just going to let my buddy haul it away as I didn't think it worth my time to find a truck and a trailer to haul it in myself.
I have a pretty good plan, but it hinges on the value I have to count it as, I assure you, it is crazy... But totally doable. And as a bonus I will be building it with the local schools shop class.
The most expensive yard in Indy is paying 120 a ton. 120 x .75 = 90
I'd say 100 bucks would be fair.

$100 definitely makes it possible. Just need to get a motor tranny and rollcage for $1916... piece of cake right?
I do have a motor/harness accessories I bought years ago for $1000 (assuming I can find the recepit, but that would leave me needing a tranny and a cage, with only $1000 or so, figure at least $200 for rattle can paint and incidentals, $200 for junkyard/ebay turbo and a home made meth inejection, leaves $600 for tubing and a transmission.
well, you don't need a roll cage for GRM challenge, do you?
If its an nhra track you need one to run 11.49 or faster.

That really should be a -$500 start to the budget..... Maybe even a -$1000 start if they use the stock drivetrain.

Can't let kids build and drive a car that isn't safe.

Just to be clear. By Challenge standards, you'll need a roll cage to go 11 seconds twice.
That is, if your Frankensteinmobile puts down an 11 second pass without a roll cage present, your car will be sidelined and not allowed to run again but your single 11 second pass will be scored!
Cut your paint costs. Spray rustolium in rhe can $9 qt. At wally world. 2 qts cover great.

You sure that's true? That would be nuts...it encourages bonzai runs without safety equip. Pretty sure you can only score what you're tech'd to.

No. That's not right.
You would be sidelined, and only scored to the highest level the car was prepped for.
If the car is prepped for 11.49 and you run a 9 second 1/4 mile, you are credited with 11.49. That's it.
It is summarized in the rules under "Safety" by stating: "Your safety prep level may limit your drag race times".

BTW, 11.49 is incorrect for a cage.
Cage is required if it goes 10.99 or faster, or 135 mph.
Roll bar is required under 11.49, or under 13.49 if it is a convertible.

Been 6 years since ive been too the track too run, didnt know nhra dropped it to 10.99. I just remembered reading the challenge requires you too meet the tracks rules.
A roll bar is required if you run quicker than 11.50.
A roll cage is required if you run 9.99 with a stock firewall, or 10.99 and quicker with a modified firewall, or over 135 mph.
The roll cage must be certified if you run 9.99 or quicker.
This is a quick reference chart for safety equipment.

There are a lot of other detail items in the general rules that are posted on line at NHRA.com
Also, the driver need to have a Pro license if you run 9.99 or quicker.
