so my dad dropped off his 01 'Hoe for a new fuel pump. Never been replaced, 227k miles and has lived it's entire life inthe midwest. It's ugly. Any suggestions on how to get this thing off and save the tank? every tab that you would normally use just crumbles. It's now been soaking in PB for 24 hours and no movement other than pieces coming off the outer ring.

For me, first step is wire brush. a lot of wire brush. Remove all loose material. Use compressed air also. Then, hit it with the penetrant. I've always had more luck with rusty things when I do gross rust removal first with mechanical means.

Not a bad idea. Advance sold dad the wrong pump anyway, so I just ordered a delphi and locking ring off Amazon for less.

There's a special tool for removing those. Looks like this:

For the really rusty ones, sometimes I put an impact on it (not really supposed to) and it'll hammer it loose.

When you know the rules, you are allowed to break them

problem is where those tabs are supposed to be for that tool to work are gone. rusted away.

destroy the lock ring, not the tabs on the tank, take the thinnest part of the ring and drive it "in", once you get the sender unit out you can finish cleaning , get a new lockring , gasket and reassemble, fatherinlaws truck just got this treatment and it looked a hell of alot worse.

Its resealed and back in service with no leaks

Just did this on my Silverado and sure am glad mine wasn't that bad. Are you having to change your harness also?

When I did the one in my 99 Silverado last year I took a chisel and found the thin spot in it and split it in half. Then used a combination of small prybar and channel locks to finish ripping it out.

For some reason I was worried about breaking the old fuel pump. You know, hte one I'm pulling out and throwing away? Yeah.... not my brightest moment. I'll blame the late hour and gas fumes. Yeah... thats it!
