So we have a 99 S-10 (well Sonoma actually) 4x4, extended cab. The main brake line running from the front to rear rusted thru.
Any one here changed one out? How much of a PITA is it? I need to figure what I am going to do....
I know its not as exciting as other GRM topics, but I figure I have the best chance of getting answers here. The wife has been driving the truck because I am waiting on parts for her Audi. So the least broken car we own is now the Vette
Just grab a roll of 3/16 tube and some tube nuts at the flaps. Route away from debris, moving objects, and heat.
If it rotted through in one place, the rest ain't far behind. Replace it all, don't splice it.
1/4 inch line to the rear, actually. If you want to run it properly, you need to remove the gas tank, which will probably open a whole new can of worms. Its ok to run a new line elsewhere, as long as its mounted properly so it doesn't rub through on something.
Sorry for the misinformation. And thanks for catching it.
First thing, spray the best penetrating fluid You have on the bleeders. On the threads and in the hole. Do this once a day until you do the job.
When removing the old line don't bother with wrenches. Cut the line with sidecutters close to the fittings and use a six point deep socket. Save the fittings, oem used weird fittings sometimes, you may need to re-use them.
Remove what you can but don't worry about the line behind the tank, you can leave it in there, it won't hurt anything.
You don't need to remove the tank, just shove the new line between the tank and frame and keep going until it makes it all the way through. Put electrical tape over the end of the line while you do that so you aren't filling the line with underbody crud when you're shoving it in there. Giggity. Once you get it routed and hooked up zip tie it to the fuel lines or whatever.
Do a gravity bleed then a pressure bleed. Don't let the master cylinder get empty during bleeding.
Boppity bang, good as new.
