I want to put a fuel cell in the chevette. In the SCCA rallycross rule book it says "any nonstock fuel cell, filter or pump located in the passenger compartment must be shielded by a metal bulkhead." Does anybody have any pics or an explanation they can share of what that should look like in a hatchback?

Thanks

Build a metal box around the exterior of the cell that is the only realy way in a hatch

This is correct. You could also put a divider that goes from the top to the bottom (straight up and down) to separate the seats from the back of the car.

Or close it in with a vertical piece where the rear seat back would be, tying it into a horizontal piece straight back from the top of the vertical piece/where the top of the rear seat would be.

I had actually thought about a clothes washer top as an easy way to have a big access door, but only if I could make it look like it wasnt a wash machine.

Another thought was a galvanized wash tub upside down over the fuel cell held down with either some type of latch or dzus fasteners.

I'm sure there are more details (perhaps in the definitions, other rules or interpretations), but as quoted tgere sure are a LOT of loopholes...

- It doesn't say what kind of metal. (Is magnesium acceptable?)

- It doesn't say the thickness of the metal. (Would aluminum foil be ok?)

- It doesn't say it has to be welded in place. (Screws?  Rivets?  Liquid nails?)

- It doesn't say it has to be secured at all. (Is it ok to place a loose metal bucket over it?)

- It doesn't define what the passenger compartment is. (If the rear seat back and the fiberboard package tray are still in place, it that area the "passenger compartment", or the "luggage compartment"?)

- It doesn't say whether the bulkhead can have holes or not  (Would metal window screening be ok?)

- If there is a cover over the fuel cell but the floor below it is cut out, is it actually in the passenger compartment, or outside the car?

Etc, etc.

Obviously almost none of these ideas are ok.  Don't do them.  My point is it's a really nebulous rule as stated, and probably not very enforceable.  I think you can use tidbits from most of those ideas.

For example... I would suggest a vertical metal panel in the place of the rear seat back (or affixed to the roll cage).  It can be screwed in (or welded if you want the rigidity).  You could then reuse the hinges fiberboard package tray with a metal panel on the underside for ease of access and maintenance.  (Or make a complete metal door hinged with a piano hinge).  (OR.. a washing machine lid!).  That makes the rear area the "fuel compartment " and the front area the "passenger compartment ".

Once you decide, it might be worth verifying with your local safety steward before building.

Good luck!

FWIW someone used rubber floor mats as a separator at nationals a few years ago. It may have also been slowed because there wasn't a big store to get metal, or enough time to have something more permanent installed.
