Anth my man, you are the only person I know who remembers that cartoon where the guy melts into the car. I've been trying for years to figure out what it was called. I would have figured it out too, if it weren't for those meddling kids.

Turbo Teen.

You can thank me later.

I've been fairly active in this thread. However, aside from a few responses to actual "driving a truck should be illegal unless you can prove you need it for work" posts, I think much of "my side" aren't "buthurt" (God that's such a stupid word, I wish it would just DIE already) at all.

Speaking for myself, I'll tell you that the takeaway from this thread is that there are some who need to get a freaking LIFE and start to care less about what they assume total strangers "need" to drive or don't "need" to drive.

I couldn't care less what you drive, or what anyone else drives for that matter. That entire part of this thread is ludicrous at best and harmful at worst.

I've owned trucks for 40 years now, that ain't gonna change.

Currently DD a '14 Silverado ext. cab 4X4, LTZ fwiw. Always kept a truck for tow/ hauling and winter/ storm use w/ a second vehicle to keep the miles off the truck. Planned on a 3-series xi or Charger R/T but figured I don't need it, I like my truck well enough. Spending $10-20+K on another vehicle plus insurance didn't make sense either. Don't care about the footprint or the cost of fuel, if I need it I buy it. My 15 mile commute ain't breaking the bank.

Always been a base model, hose 'em out rubber floor mat truck guy, don't need no bells n whistles. I did want a loaded PU for my retirement truck till I figured I wanna enjoy it now instead of when I'm on a budget. After 40 years of driving fix-em-up beaters I'll take the heated leather seats, TYVM.

A second vehicle may still happen. Recently thinking used Volt, not for any green reasons but because it's on my list of cool cars I want to own.

Anybody that knows me has ever told me I don't need a truck. 4 wheel drive is another (funny) story though. I don't tell them what they need or don't need either, it's none of my business.

SVreX wrote: I agree, but that perspective is only one side of the equation, and misses the realities of the complexities of highway revenue sources. A fuel tax may not keep up with rising construction costs, as one is a flat fee per gallon (which has been stagnant for a long time), and the other has inflationary pressures on it. So yes, I agree that construction costs have risen and the tax per gallon has not. But usage has also climbed. There are far more vehicles using far more gallons of fuel. So, it is a bit disingenuous to say "taxes have not risen". Tax rates have not risen, but tax revenues have. Plus, highway revenues are a complex network of revenue sources, not a simple fee per gallon. They include local option taxes, federal general funds, state general funds, sales taxes, toll fees, over-the-road fees, lease revenues to private companies, etc. etc. In some instances, taxpayers are paying twice: Washington Post article I do not profess to understand the whole picture, nor do I know whether or not the funds are sufficient or properly managed. The system is (deliberately) complex, so very few of us have any idea of the truth. Here is what I know- There is precious little evidence that our roads are improving, regardless of how high the taxes are, and there is no honesty in discussing the costs or revenue sources. So, I am clueless whether an increase in taxes for road improvement is needed or not. But I won't rubber stamp an additional tax as a necessity for improving our transportation system, and will definitely not play the "let's blame the evil truck owners" game. It's all a berkeleyin political game, and I won't play.

I believe that some states have problems with road maintenance, but not others. Politicians seem to have too much of an incentive to not give direct information about what the city/county/state/country needs to do to meet them. I do know that if costs for the government go up, taxes must go up. I'm not the biggest fan of gas tax proposals that track how many miles you go with GPS, invading privacy during the process, but raising the current gas tax that doesn't invade privacy is supposedly unreasonable.

I'm surprised that someone hasn't mentioned that we live in a big country with big roads, so our incentive is to fill the roads with big trucks and SUVs. Our society expects men to be tough, so a truck or big SUV purchase helps fill that role. It expects women to be nurturers and reasonable, which ironically leads them to buy them in case of accidents with men with those vehicles. We have the second most wealthy population in the world, so people have the money to buy what they want, so I won't verbally beat people up about trucks and SUVs they buy. I do suggest to people that I know if they should get a sedan instead of a truck or SUV since they will take it to heart, even if they don't go in that direction.

Volkswagen said that they want to be the #1 car company; they may never be able to get there with cheap fuel in the U.S. without selling a truck in big numbers, and making their Passat good enough to be the highest selling sedan year after year.

I also wonder how hybrid and other alternative fuel trucks (and SUVs) would sell when crude oil prices eventually go up.

Oh, and the F-series and Silverado have been among the highest selling vehicles for 3 decades straight, so part of the study isn't new, but the decline of hybrid cars like the Prius is an interesting one.

You're new around here, aren't you?

BOTH of those trucks belong to our friend Aussiesmg, and the road they are sitting on is his personal property. It is literally HIS road!

Some people go big. Then there is Aussie.

Sounds like he met them on the road. Would be an interesting coincidence if true but stranger things have happened.

As for trucks and using them. I did 650 miles towing a two car trailer on Friday with my 1 ton 4x4 crew cab diesel dually. This was a personal trip and not for any type of work. Then today I towed a single car trailer with a blazer chalet on it. Now occasionally I also drive this truck to work, your typical office job or 'Corporate America' for those of you that refer to it like that. Now I'm sure there are plenty of whiney shiny happy people that walk by my truck in that parking lot and comment on how I don't need it. Whatever..... Maybe they don't need their Corolla, maybe they should take the bus, or maybe they should mind there own berkeleying business.

Yes, thanks for the help guys, my "his road" was a joke referring a to Aussiemg's trucks.

And again, a few people in this world (and this thread) need to MYOFB. GRM is where I come to get ideas and where we enable excess, unwise decisions and champion individuality.

I sure as hell didn't "need" a late 90's Town Car "pre-runner" but when I brought up the idea, I was not surprised to read all the "BUILD THREAD" comments and suggestions to lift it!

The last thing we need is more Communist Grandmother types dictating what the think others need. (My head hurts from repeating myself!)

I live about ten miles from them, ive seen many of his vehicles on the road. I don't care how big your truck is, keep it on your side of the yellow lines. If you cant do that then buy a smaller vehicle.

Ok, just admit you either don't get the joke or you do and just have no sense of humor.

I think we can all agree: we don't like people who cross into our lane of travel.

OK, if that is the case, maybe you should go knock on his door and talk with the man.

Not much point in taking virtual pot shots over the internet, when there is a real person who you could speak with directly and neighborly-like.
