In that situation, with two working adults in the household, I would want two city cars, if I could fit them both in the spot. I think the trade-off in the utility of the car would be offset by the ability to hit the button on your remote, and pull directly into the garage. I'm thinking an IQ or Smart with a roof rack and some sort of short-wheelbase NEV.

what kind of awesome makes up for all the compromises you just listed in that post?

In reply to belteshazzar: It is a charming place. Lots of personality and history. I wouldn't do it, but there is a certain romance about the area.

you are looking at the wrong miliage. Look at the city These cars are not made for longterm highway use (not without you hating life) but 36mpg in stop and go city driving is pretty amazing

You're right. That's only 5 mpg less than an '88 CRX HF. And I said "not even close".

All I can say is this.. load up your HF with as much emissions and safety stuff as a modern car has.. and see what kind of miliage it gets in town.

Sadly, feeling safe has trumped being frugal

I think that there's a very specific situation where they make sense: if you're filthy rich, hate being chauffeured, and just use it to get around a packed urban area where there are no corners to be had nor speed limits above 35mph.

I want to get a Smart and hand it to the guys at DIYAutotune. I figure they can increase mileage a bit.

Drove one last night. The CVT is every nightmare that everyone thinks it is, and the brakes are kind of a molassis thing that I did not like.

From the drivers seat this thing feels huge, and very tall. Did not encourage tossing into a turn.

The U turn thing actually made me giggle. It just about turns on the inner tire. Cant think of a road this thing would not do a U turn on.

Did I buy it, no, it is way to bland. It does not live up to the Go-cart handling expectations I was looking for. Not sure I could even handle any G forces sitting that far up.

When looking at modern MPG remember that is on E10-E15 so only ~85% of the good gas that we got back in the "heyday" of the late 80's early 90's for mileage.
