The Super Scirocco now has it's very own web page. Work has begun, with plenty more to come!

welding the floor is next, followed by a fuel system revamp, then brakes, then......well you get the picture!
Sweet. My first car was a '78. I will definitely be living vicariously through you guys on this one.
outstanding! good to see you getting started on the 'Rocco!
Why does everyone think the `70s automatically means disco? 1976 in Punk Rock:

Seriously though, looking forward to it! I'm a VW guy, and jealous that you found one.

Oh come on now......
Everyone knows KISS ruled the 70s!
Watching with excitement. I miss my old Roc. Supposedly back in the ATL region again.
Going stock ABA including Fuel injection and ignition? Gearbox?
I have some leftover interior bits if you need any.
Leisure suites. LOL Now I have to go see if I can did up a copy of "leisure suit Larry"
Great car!!!! I remember the 16V versions being faster and better handeling then the 944's when they came out. Many 944 owners were not so happy.

Off topic, but thanks for my Friday punk rock infection. Time for a fresh Pandora channel.
On topic- I love Joe's Scirocco. It's the first turd brown car I've been able to say that about...sorry Per...
Although greater power gains can be had with the modern ABA head, I'd like the car to appear fairly stock underhood.
The more modern head / intake looks foreign and strange in the Rocco's engine bay, so I'm having a 1.8 liter head built to install upon the ABA. The head will have bigger valves, a more aggressive cam, and other trick bits that I'll convey later. It won't appear completely stock under the hood, but will look a lot more natural than a direct ABA swap. The plan is to have the car run CIS-E fuel injection.
As this is a front-drive 1900 lb car, I don't need crazy power to make the VW extremely entertaining. I'm looking at a goal of 150 hp at the crank, which should be do-able with the built 1.8 liter (hydro) head.
Gearbox wise I'm currently searching for a close ratio 5spd from a Mk1 GTI. I believe the 4K is the one I need, but I'll need to to a bit more research.
Thanks for the interest guys! I should have some time this weekend to dive into it, so look for more updates soon!
Here's my buddy's '79 Rocco with euro bumpered, "tv" headlighted goodness to get some inspiration.
Mk1 GTI transmission is a 4k. Make SURE you replace the pop rivets on the ring gear with the VW bolt kit!
Also, the 2H code trans is pretty much the same as the 4K, and also from the MKI GTi.

I'm looking forward to this one!
Re. the ABA bottom end and hydro head: I had an ABA block / GTI head in a MkII (Digifant injection) - it made 95hp at the wheels when it was dyno'ed. Air flow thru the head is pretty restrictive - it's a 1970s design, but the air also has to turn 180 degrees in the head before it exits.
I guess 150HP with a cam, headwork and bigger valves is doable, but it might be a stretch. 95HP in a 2100# car kinda sucked, BTW, so it now has an ABA with a WRX turbo bolted on :)
I was about to suggest just swapping in a 16v from a Mk2, but then I did some research.

My roc was ABA bottom end, stock 83 GTi head with g grind cam and adjustable cam sprocket running cis injection, but not cis-e, just lambda control. OPM Motorsports LSD. Ed Senf dynoed it for me and with cam adjustment was able to put down 100hp at the wheels and 115lb-ft of torque. Super flat curve too. Got to 100lb-ft by 2000 rpm and stayed there until about 5500. Was a monster with the 2h gearbox. Awesome fun car.
In anyone else is looking for a Mk1 VW project, I ran into these this weekend:
