Hi, are Scott shop towels fine to use with panel wipe before paint? I see they also do a “Heavy Duty” version which says are solvent resistant, but none actually say they’re to be used as panel wipes. Just doing a small touch up spot spray so don’t want to get an expensive trade size box of dedicated panel wipes.
Lint free wipes are normally recommended, aren't they? I don't know if the Scott towels meet that criteria.
Well I read a lot of people saying they use "blue shop towels", so assuming these are the sort of thing they use. Could you recommend any appropriate lint free wipes that can be bought cheaply in a small quantity? All I can find sold as panel wipe towels are big expensive trade packs.
Take one and clean you bath room mirror with it, if lint is present the answer is no. If mirror is clean and lint free then the answer is maybe.
Thanks I'll do that. Is there anything else to worry about other than lint though? Like I was going to use Regina Blitz which I have at home, but on the pack it said if used with solvents there could be colour transfer. My concern is whether there could be some chemical or other residue transfer from the cloth, or am I overthinking it?
Use a tack rag no matter what type of rags you're using for cleaning. I use new white cloth rags for wipe down with wax & grease remover before paint. Use a wet rag to apply the W&G remover and dry with a dry rag. Then just before shooting paint I use a tack rag. The tack rag will pick up any lint, dust, hair, etc.
Thanks everyone for the advice. I've bought the Scott shop towels now, the heavy duty ones which apparently have little to no lint, I think because they're actually woven polyester and not paper.
I'm not a body guy, but blue shop towels have something in them. Ever use one with some windex to clean a window? It leaves a film. Not sure what the film is, but I'm sure it isn't bonding enhancer.
I use cheap, plain white paper towel and lacquer thinner for pre printing prep. Done a handful of cars that way, as well as all my part restoration. Never had an issue. But my junk ain't show quality.

Ahh damn, you worry me now. Looks like I'll be using plain white paper towel then, thanks.

I did a bit more research and it seems you're absolutely right, normal Scott shop towels must contain binders and glue which leave a residue, as they make another version specifically for glass which say they contain no binders or glue so they leave no streaky residue and also are low lint. Taking my heavy duty ones back to exchange for the glass version! Thanks @Curtis73 I could've made a bad mistake if you hadn't said something
You're welcome. I'm no expert when it comes to body work, I but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
