While brainstorming about things I can sell from the challenge car I got to thinking about airbags. I read online that junkyards often buy them for good money, but the LKQ we were at yesterday had a sign saying they no longer sell airbags - I don't know if that means they don't buy them anymore, it just got me thinking. Does anyone on here have any experience with selling airbags? Any tips? On the interwebs people are throwing out some pretty large numbers that they get for their airbags, especially passenger side ones.
I think I heard that airbags are expensive to ship. Considered hazardous due to explosive nature.
Mostly can't ship because of the explosives. If you disclose it then the price rises significantly and if you don't disclose it that's a Federal crime
The LKQ pick-your-part and other self-service junkyards post signs that they won't sell you an airbag anymore because they don't want to deal with liability and the hassle of figuring out which are safe for you to buy and which are recalled Takata shrapnel bombs.
Full service salvage yards (see car-part.com retailers) are happy to sell used airbags still because their inventory system is more sophisticated than the u-pull yards.
The u-pick type yards in AZ have prices listed for air bags so I presume they sell them. From $35 - 45

So will they buy my airbags? Guess I have some phone calls to make
I checked into this a few years ago. I was required to take a $500 weekend course on hazardous materials to get certified on how to ship them correctly. There are certain procedures required to strap them down for shipping as there is a chance they may go off in the hold of a plane. You have to fill out extra paperwork and show that you are certified to ship and that it's done to guide lines. Again, they are considered hazardous/dangerous and the shipping will be more expensive because of it. My local salvage yard no longer sells air bags to the public either.

Put the airbag you have on CL/FB. Sell it local only, no shipping. Given the rarity and difficulty to obtain one, someone will come for it.
How much do you think I should charge for 1995 Civic airbags? $100 each?
Is that a Takata recall bag? If it is unreplaced please scrap it.
No, that was 2001-2002 Civics. Mine's good.
My car is an older one, so from looking at prices on eBay I might be able to get $100 for both airbags plus the airbag controller. Well, that's better than nothing and puts me $100 closer to a turbo kit on the challenge car!
