Somewhere in the unwritten rules is to build something that you want. That's what I'm doing.

Besides, if everyone else pushes their entries past 11/10th's your truck could easily move up the ranks.

Good points. Sometimes I let my competitiveness get the best of me...at times, it's a flaw.

I can't wait to see a couple of Shelby Dakotas there. A close friend of mine had #833 for about 12 years. It was mint, low mileage red one. I really liked that truck.

Question. My challenge Shelby has the OEM Shelby air cleaner. I want to use that on my almost completely restored #233 and use one of my old after market cleaners on the Challenge Dak. How to I budget this. I would say the value of both cleaners is about $50 each. Can I just swap them?

In reply to Moparman:

Personally, I wouldn't have said anything and just used it. I just don't see Shelby Dak parts floating out there to get a decent price range on them, but I would personally view it as a trade of equal FMV value, so $0 spent. But if you can find a price and it's significant more then what you are replacing, use it as part of your recoup costs.

I'd shoot a note to Per running the idea by, highlighting that this truck really is a donor for your original one. I think a trade would be OK.

As a side note, I've never seen a Shelby Dak air cleaner sell for as low as $50 (more like $100-$300), but have seen used generic 14" aftermarket air cleaners go for $5 or less at swap meets.

if that's the case, you could trade the SD air cleaner into your stash and take a whole bunch of stuff out of your stash, as long as the total on both sides of the trade is roughly equal FMV.

in 2002, i had a spare transaxle that i put into my stash, and pulled a new clutch disc and pressure plate out of the stash to use on the challenge car. transaxle FMV was about equal to the clutch disc and pressure plate (approx $200 at the time). Per blessed it and i ran with it.

The aftermarket air cleaner involved is a carbon fiber cold air set up which cost me $100 when new about 5 years ago.

That's a little fancier than the pitted chrome Trans-Dapt ones I was thinking of.

I am in touch with a set of 14x7 wheels for the Dak. Why are 14x7 wheels attractive to me? Because I have 12 used Kuhmo V170 225-50-14 tires with between 25% and 50% rubber left. I usually sell the 50% tires for $25 - $35 each because they ar two years old an fairly hard when I sell them and give away the 25% tires just to clear them out of the garage. The wheels are $110 plus shipping for all for. This give me a cheap setup. I cannot find used 225-50-15 R-tires for under $145 each (can only find Hoosiers). What says the board?

poor-man's Formula V = low-odor mineral spirits, applied with a foam roller. if you can modulate the throttle to avoid boiling the rears, you'll be fine.

I have Formula V. It works great. I am more cocnerned with the price to charge myself.

Are there any used 14" Kumho's currently listed on Racing Junk? I still haven't gotten a feel for the searches on that site, but it might be a good place to see what people are asking for used 14" R comps. Maybe the Philly region SCCA classifieds too.

I'd say once you get the wheels try a set of the 25% ones you have on the truck and see how it does with that tire on there. At under 23" diameter they won't be rubbing anywhere on the truck. I'm curious to see how they handle with the weight of the truck on them.

There are nine available anywhere. I cannot find any 225-50-15s which would fit on teh OEM Shelby wheels. The best I can find for 15s are a set of 205-50-15 Hoosier road race tires for $175.

A neighbor has a Shelby Dakota sitting in his driveway. Complete, light bar, wheels, foglights...everything. Hasn't moved in over 5 years. I really have to ask him about it someday, they are too cool.

In reply to Moparman:

I use a 4" foam roller to apply it, and I have a container that the roller fits nicely into. I use a measuring cup to fill the container, then I treat the tires. A gallon is 128 fluid ounces, so divide cost per gallon by 128 to get cost per ounce, then multiply that by the number of ounces you use.

IIRC I use about a quart on a set of four 225/45-15s. I stack the tires and work from the top down, so any drippage / spillage winds up on the lower tires.

I have used it before. That is not my problem. My problem is what to charge myself. Also, for the new wheels, I assume I have to include shipping in the cost

Yea, shipping counts.

No local 14x6 or 14x7 wheels available? I don't think I have any 14x6 steelies left, but I can check with my buddy. I think he might have a set of 14x6 4.5" BC Rallye's for sale.

Nope. I live in Poconos. I can get 14x7 aluminum for $160 including shipping.

Yea, 15x10 6-8 lug wagon wheels are probably more common in the Poconos. How much grief do you get for having a 2WD truck (or two) up there?

Which turbo might be good for my Shelby. I only need to make 8 to 12 psi of boost. I am more concerned about turbo flanges on popular turbos. I am finding many good used Subie turbos.

Ran compression checks on my 142,000 mile Shelby Dakota Challenge Truck:

1) 165 2) 170 3) 165 4) 160 5) 165 6) 155 7) 165 8) 170 (just over)

Not too bad , eh?

Moparman, 318ci devided by 2 = 159ci

Seems like a turbo off a 2.2 would be cheap, especially if they are the much maligned mitsubishi turbos that are very small (quick spooling) and can be maxed at 18psi (though not that long, long enough for the Challenge)

JGSTools.com sells the pre-cut turbo flanges for the Turbo-Dodge pattern (and others) or you could roll your own if you're close to budget.

Do I have to count tune-up parts (plugs, cap, rotor, wires - all OEM replacements) into the budget?

I believe so, but fluids don't count.
