I have an opportunity to purchase my BIL wrecked and very rusty 2001 Miata stick shift car. He looked after the mechanical side of the car so I have no doubt this could be a good parts car to up grade my 1989 NA.
The thing is the insurance company wants a $1K for the buy back (he is getting $4k) I was thinking $600-800 or am I out of touch?
This is time sensitive so I have to move quickly.

Is the engine/trans/(diff?) worth that to you knowing the history versus an unknown ebay or forum seller dropout?
If it nets you things you would have got eventually or at least would have seriously considered, knowing the history is probably worth the extra money you think you’re going to spend.
I’d imagine you’d still end up ahead.
How bad is it? Ie consider how much you could recoup by selling other parts.
So you're trying to decide if a complete, running 2001 with a known history is worth $600-800?
Hell yes.
I'd match the insurance company's $1000 offer and do a complete rollerskate swap between the two cars along with the brake booster You'll gain 25 hp, a bunch of torque, upgraded brakes, possibly a Torsen, improved bracing, better engine management and maybe a 6-speed.
What alternatives do you have at that price point?
Do it. Hurt angines around here bring 500, subframes 100 each, control arms 20 each, spindles 40, diffs 200 open 500 torsen, trans 125-300 5-6, etc.
There is literally no way to make significant improvements to your na cheaper than this. AND its a well known quantity vs an engine dude on Craigslist says ran goodbefore being pulled.....
If the car is rusty, it's trash. But, most everything can be bolted up to your NA... so yeah, I'd do it. I've even seen NB interiors dropped into the NA - they bolt up for the most part. Seems like a good deal on upgrades for your car, if you trust that he kept it up maintenance-wise.
Depends how wrecked it is? I purchased a wrecked 99 once with a broken differential housing.

That can be welded up, not a big problem.

If Keith says do it, do it.
Buy/Miata = yes.
Simple miatamatics.
That's why it's called the answer.
Sounds like a great opportunity to build an Exocet...
As a data point, i sold my wrecked NA with a torsen for 700$.
