+1. Not a fan of this origami styling the Japanese have gotten into. I keep hoping it's a phase they'll grow out of.
Besides, Pontiac already tried it and everyone hated it.
There's a Honduh dealer near my house, I rarely pay it any mind, occasionally they'll have a used car from another manufacturer that catches my eye.
Yesterday I noticed the Honda Passport for the first time. I didn't know what it was, I even commented to SWMBO that I actually like the look of the new Pilots, assuming that's what it was.
Until this thread, I hadn't bothered to look to see what it was.
I don't know anything about it, just caught my eye, specifically the pair of "stormtrooper" looking black and white ones they had.
All cars and SUVs for the most part look the same to me.
I kinda miss the wild styling the 80s and early 90s brought.
Count me in the minority, but I like my wife's 2018 CX-5 way more than I should. It's only failing is that I wish it had about 125 more HP, but they did add a turbocharged model to the lineup in 2019 to help with that. It handles worlds better than other crossovers I've sampled, it's comfortable inside, and it has more road feel and feedback than a lot of sporty cars I've driven. It even sounds good. For a jellybean crossover, I think Mazda even did a good job with the styling.
It's like a poor man's Porsche Macan, sorta.

I read a funny article other day claiming cars don't make sense because SUVs and Crossovers out performed them. I took issue until driving in the city in my pickup how fast everyone darted around in their CUVs, the article was written by a younger city dweller so it got me thinking about perspective. They all look tragically the same, and in Atlanta there are 3 magic colors of cars, white, black, and grey, most CUVs come in the white flavor so I like to call them marshmallows.
On the flip side I drove my Camaro in town today and was the one doing the darting.
That being said, the Lambo, Maserati, Porsches, Bentley, all look 'better', but that's like saying they're the best worse looking. I think there's a lot of room to get crossovers looking good, proportions aren't great, they're neither sleek or bulging...give it time.
In my humble yet worthless opinion the X5M was one of the best looking SUV's ever made.
With the 2 door Tahoe and Trailblazer SS in a two way tie for 2nd place.
I like my SUV's but I'd rather have a pickup.
I wonder how much of the consitant look across all the CUV's have more to do with aerodynamics for fuel efficiency vs. styling? It would make sense for your biggest sellers to be the most efficient and leave the styling cues to lower volume cars.

I think of an SUV as more of an alternative to a minivan or family car. Unless you get into a Suburban the towing capacity of a truck can't be easily replaced by an SUV.

meh, I'll take my SUV boxy, so they can actually do things like carry stuff. Even my wife's pretty big CX-9 is pretty pathetic in its cargo space, like most of these crossovers and sloped-back SUv things. It does drive great, though. i'd have no trouble throwing it around in the woodland roads if i didn't know the 25 things my wife and kids didn't stow correctly woudln't come crashing onto the floor lol...
i don't see any point in owning an SUV if i can't haul big stuff in it (or if it has a low towing weight, or if it can't legitimately off-road). Wife got the CX-9 because she didn't like the Sequioa but wanted to stay sitting up high for some reason.
I'm personally a bit biased toward boxy stuff though.

I don't even understand how that's considered an SUV or even a crossover. I mean, it's basically a sportwagon with giant wheels. I mean, i'd rock it because it's a Lambo and it prorbably drives awesome, but i don't really understand what its purpose it....
What y'all lack is a bit of perspective... the designs being brought to the US are frankly tame and sedate...

I think that's the point... what is the point of 95% of the suvs on the road? They can't tow, they can't do off-road, they are not made for any particular job and do most jobs worse than a minivan. 80% of them look identical.

My father said the same thing about 70’s & 80’s cars. I think it’s just a generational thing, because I agree with you. Though I’ve also started liking full-size vans, large sedans, and brown/beige, just like my father did...
Most people buy what the car companies and sales staff want them to buy. Many of the best marketing people in the world work for automakers. Were Olds Cutlass Supremes really that good... I mean, I kinda like them since they're G-Bodies but were they better than an Accord for most people? Were late '70s Thunderbirds the best car on the market? Is there much love for '90s Explorers now? Those were the best sellers of their times and they were what the car companies wanted people to buy.

This was definitely my point. But I guess the reason SUVs "CUVs" whatever the berkeley you want to call them sell so well is because 90% of people don't give a E36 M3 how a car looks or performs, at which point, it might as well look like a dishwasher or a tanning bed.
