What about an Intrepid or similar with the 3.5? Somebody on here has/had one that apparently surprised a lot of people he encountered at stoplights and such. That would cover your FWD, your A/C, and your non-GM needs. And I think it certainly fits into the "sleeper" category. (In fact, it's probably about as hard to see in traffic as a Camry.)

I dont believe I have ever heard of an intrepid that was faster than 15 minutes in the 1/4 mile much less 14 seconds. I will look into that.

Also saw a 626 with a v6 and a 5speed...gold color...looks anything BUT fast...lol...gonna look into it a little....

I kind of like the v6 escort idea if its relatively easy. So many cool ideas...

The 626 V6 5spd is an MX6 LS V6 in disguise. It's a good choice.

if you are going to go V6 Escort.. maybe go with a wagon? That would up the sleeper factor

One of these:

With 3.73 gears, a shift kit, intake, and maybe some exhaust work. Should provide miles of smiles.

If we're talking cheap speed, we really should be talking about early '90s DSMs. If they run long enough to make a 1/4 mile pass, a couple thousand buys you low 14s easily.

The "SLEEPER" part is the problem though.

My advice, in order of easiest/sleeperiest/hits all the requested buttons:

  1. Turbo Mercury Tracer LTS. 4-doors, just add boost. I have been absolutely shocked and amazed by the amount of abuse a stock BP will take, certainly more than any honda motor I've ever seen.

  2. Turbo Festiva. Keep it rock-stock on the outside. Maybe that obnoxious teal color with some hideous pink factory graphics.

  3. 80's Civic + nitrous. I know you said no hondas, but no one sees the gold on gold 88 4 door or wagon coming. I know for a fact that a gutted (maybe not your style) 3rd gen hatch, bone stock, with a 55 shot will and lots of timing advance will run 13.99's all day.

Bad news: Nitrous gets expensive after a while. Good news: You can score those motors for scrap value or less.

well, its hard to find, but the old (~97) lumina LTZ was a 14sec car. looked harmless except for the 4 exhaust tips out the back.

How about a V6 Tempo? I had one and it was stupid fun around town. Smoked a guy in a newer Mazda 6 V6 with it. No traction control, no airbag, no options except A/C. Lightweight, lousy mpg, but a true point and shoot driving experience. Poor car ended up in my cousin's hands and she killed it within a month.

Is there a "normal" cam for the 2.25L motor? I NEED MORE INFO ON THIS!!!! I wanted to put one of these motors in a FC.

^Not that i know of... i think there were head differences that kept you from putting the 2.5 cams in the Miller Cycle.

But i could be wrong. I would like to be wrong.

guy did not know how to drive if you beat him no offense. but a v6 mazda 6 is capapable of low low 15's off the factory floor with the right driver. headers and cai and some tuning gets you low 14's

Definitely caught him sleeping, but he didn't reel me in either. One of those merging situations where I needed to get over, he didn't want to let me over even though I had my signals on. So at the next light we ended up side-by-side. I floored it and beat him to the merge.

Not true sleepers but you might get away with them, depending on who you hang around with b13 se-r or any car that'll accept a sr20 like an early infiniti g20.

For maximas what if its beige? would that help? I really like the idea of a roadmaster but I dont know how that would translate in terms of dd-ability.

Just what you are looking for, but definitely not "no budget". To make matters worse some of the "parts" are NLA except on the used market. You could go the turbo route with one and get similar or better results.

15.2 @ 92 MPH with a horrible 60' time. I've got a total of maybe a grand in it at this point. Putting slicks on and dropping the exhaust off of it this weekend in an attempt to get a mid 14.

Oh yeah! An Altima could be a serious sleeper. The stock KA LOVES boost! Stock internals can handle 400hp if I recall correctly. And if I'm wrong picking up a replacement KA is $150-$200!
