I just had a thought about optimization.
Driver gets drivers seat.
Co-driver gets passenger seat.
Third-fifth get the back seat, except.....
If you had three people in the car it would be more efficient to pull the passenger seat and have drivers 2-3 sit in back together and save the 50lbs.
Purely from an optimization standpoint.
Not to mention the added backseat leg room on that side!
In reply to mazdeuce - Seth :
Place a cooler like an ottoman, and Driver #2 can stretch out straight while Driver #3 rests his head in the lap of #2.
So much snuggling. So much room for activities!
In reply to John Welsh :
I thought of those things. Well, not ALL of those things, but some of them certainly.
I heard "snuggling".... I'm in.
In reply to Bob the REAL oil guy. :
In the above scenario, I am am Driver #1
sonofa... I knew I shoulda bought a minivan
I see two problems with this, though: driver #3 is supposed to be resting, so it's better that they're isolated, and focusing on sleeping... while driver #2 in pax seat is helping keep an eye on driver#1 and navs.
secondly: lunch touring laps
editedly: also, the Sonata has 2.6 extra inches of legroom over the "V"
Do what you want, but know that there is only one optimal solution.
I don't know where to put this. I've thought about starting a thread along the lines of "Have we started following VLN 2018?"; but this is a bit more specific, and this is my thread. So I'm going to put it here... since I've pondered running spacers in the past.
Which is a long preamble about the VLN1 broadcast, at 15m24sec -ish in, there's an interesting shot of the spacers that they're running on the M235i Cup cars, if I'm IDing the car right.
Youtube video linked to time:
Man those things are honking big, like 60mm? I guess spacers can be OK for the track if they can survive 4 hours on the 'Ring?

I took an optimization class... this sounds like an ill-defined corner case to me
Alright, so the weather was awesome today... but I only got to use it a little bit.
After visiting grandma & grandpa... and getting a couple of internet things done; I swung by the grocery store and bought some food-bribes, the setup some paint tarps...
I got two light coats on four wheels on four wheels.... Which is a start...
Tarp aftermath:
The car's still at R&R... I'm going to swing by there tomorrow and show John the place... and see how it's going... and see if I'll be able to play with the contents of this box John graciously sent while he's in town:
I'm not sure I can emotionally deal with this car not being beige.
I don't think I have the time or "skillz" to make the whole thing blue...
I'll be happy if it doesn't come out looking like:
we'll see... we might be applying vinyl in addition to the stickers in SouthBend
In reply to sleepyhead :
The stick on hood scoop comes in a separate box. Ha
I went rolling through the entry list this morning as sleepykid#2 was upset about sleepywife going in to work. It looks like Brock's been active in sorting it about; getting the people not showing up out, and shifting some of the cars into different classes. As it stands, now, there's 3 of us in Econo (The Sonata, Seth & Civic, and Josh in the 'Killer Rabbit' {now with added turbo power!}). It's still early, and there's a chance we'll be bumped... but this is encouraging for the plan I set out with.
edit: if we do get bumped... we'll be trying to keep up with a supercharged e36 M3 to stay off the bottom
and, oh wow is SSGT-2 Small Bore going to be an interesting mix/battle this year!? Andy Hollis in the K-Miata, Neil in the big turbo 1M, a tricked out A3 "GTR"... two Focus RS', and 16 entries in total!
I am jealous of your car count! GT-1 Small Bore still sits at 2 entries which is only 1 less than last year.
In reply to klodkrawler05 :
yeah, not too many $50k cars with 2-doors and engines under 3.5L
actually, that brings up an interesting "what car"... with a current purchase price of $5-8k? Guess it'd have to be some kind of weird '92-2003 euro car?
In reply to sleepyhead :
Well, there have been a handful of e46m3's in my area for $7500-8,000 so ignoring all the other potential reasons not to buy an $8,000 m3 I would say......e46 m3.
But then I'm bias'd
In reply to klodkrawler05 :
yes, yes you are...
side note: anyone know if you can turn up the wick on an gen1 SLK?
Well, we stopped by R&R; and it looks like they've had a bunch of other work tying them up, and they're digging into the car now... and apparently finding out that tirerack has the wrong ballpoints spec'd out for the Sonata... after calling SPC to question the assembly.
Checking around, I found a place that claims they have the 'correct' 67195 (not 67190) joint "in stock"... place a "next day" order, then get an email that the part is backordered. 2-3 weeks... which isn't going to work.
So, R&R is going to call up SPC and see if the can get the "top washer" part that's different between the two asap. Otherwise, we'll resort to the lathe.
Good news is the cv boots look good, and the front bushings... while worn don't look torn... so we might just ride them as-is. They're not sure about the leak, so they're going to add some dye to see if they can track it down.
Hopefully any other surprises are more manageable, and I'll have the car back by Friday.
edit:fixed the SPC part number I transposed the numbers 7 and 9 on
I've been fussing around with the roof rack I'm fixing for my dad, that I was going to use on OneLap... and realized it's going to be too finicky getting on/off to be practical. So, I think we're going to join the two wheeled kick scooter crowd.
That was much the same assessment we made about the roof rack last year.
I think the only ones that would really be practical/lack of fuss are the suction cup style, and I don't have enough faith in suction cups to put a bike on top of the car and expect it to stay there for 3500 miles.

Mine Did!
although, we were checking the suction every gas stop (as recommended)...
trolling around their website, and I found they've added "the monkey bar":
which I'm only short two cups, and someway to connect the dowels in pulling off... tbd
